PURPOSE OF ROLE We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Civil & Structural Design Engineer / Technologist to join our Oil, Gas and Power Engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the Civil & Structural engineering discipline within the Oil, Gas and Power Generation Engineering Team, including the management and development of the discipline and the team within it. You will be required to develop designs for projects and tenders while providing specialist support and expertise to projects and proposals. Quality technical outputs are required that satisfy all requirements (Client, Codes, and Standards) by adhering to internal engineering processes. This position is 80% technical and 20% supervisory, managing the Civil & Structural Engineering team members comprising of Junior Engineers/Technologists, Engineers/Technologists, and Senior Engineers/Technologists within the functional organogram. You may also be required to act also act as Lead Civil & Structural Engineer within a specific project, managing the Civil & Structural Engineering team members assigned to the project. The successful candidate is required to have a strong structural background with broad/general knowledge across the Civil Engineering Discipline (Earthworks, Storm Water, Roads etc.) applicable to Industrial projects. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS Leadership and Supervision Ensure outputs developed by the Civil & Structural Team are delivered in accordance with best practice, applicable codes and standards as well as Lesedi procedures and guides. Ensure designs are delivered on time and within budget while adhering to set budgets. Coordinate resources and identify resource demands effectively. Monitor team outputs and reallocate work as necessary. Mentor Engineers in Training (EITs), Junior Engineers, and Engineers. Develop key skills within team to align with divisional strategy. Ensure best practice within the Civil & Structural discipline. Promote and support the Lesedi Values. New Business, Tenders and Proposals Act as Technical Proposal/Tender Lead. Develop User Requirements Specifications (URS) and Operational Requirements Specifications (ORS) with clients. Review and clarify URS and provide input into Proposal/Tender Strategy. Lead concept development, feasibility checks and value engineering exercises. Provide guidance to technical team and form partnerships with sub-contractors / specialist consultants. Compile and review technical specifications and enquiry packages to sub-contractors. Review technical outputs and adjudicate sub-contractor offers. Develop Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and estimate engineering effort for EPC and EPCM projects. Identify technical and commercial risks. Design and Design Reviews This role has a strong Structural Design focus with broad, general knowledge required within the Civil Engineering Field. Develop, Oversee and Review Civil and Structural basic and detailed designs: Develop and Review Civil & Structural Design Basis Documents. Interpret Geotechnical Study Results for foundation designs. Develop and Review Bulk Earthwork Concepts and Designs. Develop and Review Structural Designs (Concrete and Steel). Develop and Review Bills of Quantities. Develop and Review Sub-Contractor Scope of Work Documents. Develop and Review Structural Maintenance Manuals. Review and Approval of Structural Concrete and Structural Steel Drawings. Evaluate software / analysis tool needs within the Civil & Structural discipline. Identify and apply required codes and standards. Manage design changes and consider financial aspects for decision making. Identify engineering risks within projects. Address internal/external review comments and obtain AFD and AFC Freeze. Oversee and review specialist consultant designs to ensure compliance and timely delivery. Approve designs performed by the Lesedi Civil & Structural Design Team. Ensure designs are aligned with industry best practices. Identify and apply required codes and standards. Design Integration Interface with other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated design delivery. Participate in Integrated Design Reviews. Foster integration between engineering disciplines. Site Engineering, Commissioning and Project Handover Support Construction Team by resolving technical queries, performing site inspections, and implementing design changes. Support Project Team with handover and close-out of engineering deliverables. Develop as-built documentation and resolve punch lists. Contract Negotiations Participate in client / sub-contractor technical negotiations to reach approval/signature stage. Team Development and Management Maintain good team morale and performance. Develop staff within the knowledge area and identify training opportunities. Transfer knowledge to EITs, Junior Engineers, and Engineers. Apply working knowledge of performance management. QUALIFICATION Essential: Sc / B.Eng / B.Tech in Civil/Structural Engineering Essential: Registered as a Professional Engineer/Technologist Preferred: Leadership Diploma or formal Leadership training EXPERIENCE At least 12 Years of relevant Structural Design Experience with some exposure to Civil Engineering. At least 4 years in the Industrial, Power Generation or Oil & Gas Industry within an EPC or EPCM Environment. At least 1 year of supervisory experience (leading and managing a technical team) COMPETENCIES KNOWLEDGE Technical Knowledge Good knowledge of the Engineering Design Life Cycle with the EPC or EPCM Environment. Good knowledge of applicable codes and standards. Knowledge of the OHS Act and its Regulations. Good knowledge of ISO quality systems principles. Technically competent within the applicable knowledge area. Good understanding of the relevant industries. Essential Knowledge Areas: Greenfields Industrial Plant Design Experience. The role requires a strong Structural Engineering focus with broad / general knowledge of Civil Engineering required. Reinforced Concrete Structural Design. Structural Steel Design. Seismic Design and Analysis of Concrete and Steel Structures. Beneficial Knowledge Areas Design of Structural Supports for Piping Systems and Storage Tanks. Rotating Machinery Foundation Design (Pumps, Compressors, Turbines, Generators). Commercial and Financial Knowledge Good knowledge of contract management and types of contracts (NEC, FIDIC). Good knowledge and application of project delivery models (EPC, EPCM). Good understanding and application of financial aspects of projects. SKILLS Computer literate (MS Office) Excellent knowledge of Structural Analysis and Design Tools (Prokon or equivalent, Autodesk AEC Collection or equivalent). Good leadership skills. Able to communicate clearly with good verbal and written communication skills. Excellent report writing skills. High degree of analytical thinking. Adaptable and flexible. Financial savviness.
