Purpose of the Role The Registered Nurse ICU Trained provides specialized nursing care to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. The role ensures safe, evidence-based practice, effective monitoring, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Key Responsibilities Clinical Care Deliver comprehensive nursing care to patients requiring intensive monitoring and support. Operate and manage advanced medical equipment (ventilators, infusion pumps, monitors). Administer medications and therapies in line with ICU protocols. Conduct patient assessments and respond to emergencies promptly. Patient & Family Support Provide clear communication and emotional support to patients and families. Educate families on patient conditions, treatment plans, and recovery processes. Team Collaboration Work closely with physicians, anaesthetists, and allied health professionals. Participate in handovers, case discussions, and multidisciplinary rounds. Operational Support Maintain accurate patient records and documentation. Ensure adherence to infection control and safety standards. Contribute to audits, risk assessments, and quality improvement initiatives. Qualifications & Experience Registered Nurse (RN) with valid registration at the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Post-basic qualification in Critical Care Nursing / ICU Nursing. Minimum 23 years experience in an ICU environment. Advanced Life Support (ALS) or equivalent certification (advantageous). Skills & Competencies Strong knowledge of ICU protocols and critical care practices. Ability to work under pressure in high-acuity environments. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Analytical and detail-oriented approach to patient care. Compassionate, adaptable, and resilient in challenging situations.
