Position Summary
A client of Insight Global is seeking a Controls Design Engineer to develop machine tool control systems supporting high-volume automotive production. This role involves the design, programming, and analysis of machine control systems from initial concept through production, startup, and customer acceptance.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the design of machine control systems that meet company and customer specifications while minimizing cost and engineering time, leveraging existing designs and programs whenever possible
Design control component layouts that meet applicable standards and specifications, emphasizing safety, reliability, simplicity, efficient use of space, and cost effectiveness
Program machine controllers to meet operational, performance, and safety requirements
Evaluate internal and external design capabilities and provide accurate documentation to ensure projects remain on schedule and within customer specifications
Coordinate and lead control design reviews with the Mechanical Project Engineer and assigned project coordinators prior to machine build
Prepare and submit required documentation to customers according to project schedules for approval
Maintain organized project records, including purchase orders, drawing approvals, and related documentation
Obtain competitive quotations for electrical control components (e.g., enclosures, pushbutton stations), issue requisitions, and manage long-lead-time items to support project timelines
Collaborate with shop personnel during machine build, startup, debugging, and run-off activities
Support service technicians and training personnel during machine startup at customer facilities
Provide technical support to the Sales and Parts departments as needed
Attend meetings related to project scope, scheduling, and progress
Stay current with emerging industry technologies and advise engineering leadership on innovations that could be incorporated into machine designs
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Controls Engineering or a related field
5–7 years of experience in machine tools or a related industry
Experience with internal combustion engines or powertrain applications is a plus
Working knowledge of Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and Fanuc PLCs; SolidWorks; EPLAN and/or AutoCAD Electrical; and HMI software
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Windows-based systems
Strong analytical skills with the ability to compile and interpret data, recognize patterns, draw logical conclusions, and make sound recommendations
Self-motivated and self-directed with strong organizational skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work on-site during commissioning activities
Some domestic travel may be required (approximately 5%)
