Job Description

The Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) provides direct patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. The OR RN functions in the scrub and/or circulating role, ensuring a safe, sterile environment while collaborating with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and surgical technologists to deliver high-quality perioperative care.

Key Responsibilities

Assess patients preoperatively and review medical history, labs, and surgical consent

Prepare operating room with necessary instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies

Maintain strict sterile technique and infection control standards

Function as circulating nurse and/or scrub nurse during procedures

Assist surgeons during procedures by anticipating needs

Perform surgical counts (sponges, needles, instruments) per protocol

Monitor patient status throughout surgery and respond to changes

Document intraoperative care accurately and thoroughly

Coordinate with PACU for safe patient handoff

Ensure compliance with safety protocols and time-out procedures
