Job Description

Principal Electrical Engineer (Energy) role at WSP in the UK & Ireland Join WSP to work on landmark energy projects and contribute to a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. Role Overview Work with the wider project team to lead and develop cost‑effective, efficient and innovative solutions to complex problems, creating practical designs. Deliver projects across all stages of maturity—from feasibility studies and concept design to detailed design and value engineering. Prepare and develop electrical deliverables such as single‑line diagrams, cable calculations, cable block diagrams, plant layouts, cable routing, switchgear configurations and bill of materials. Collaborate with equipment vendors on design of equipment packages and participate in technical evaluations of vendor designs. Work with owners, operators and investors to assess the condition of electrical assets and determine risk and opportunities. Develop proposals and bids for the EC&I discipline and contribute to multi‑disciplinary proposals. Responsibilities Lead and develop cost-effective, efficient and innovative solutions to complex electrical problems. Deliver projects in stages from Feasibility Studies, Concept Designs, FEED Studies, Value Engineering and Detailed Design. Prepare and develop electrical deliverables such as Single Line Diagrams, cable calculations, cable block diagrams, plant layouts, cable routing, cable containment design, switchgear configuration philosophies and produce bill of materials/quantities for electrical systems. Work with equipment vendors on developing designs of equipment packages and participate in technical evaluations of vendor designs. Work with owners, operators and investors to assess the condition of electrical assets and their designs for capability, risk, opportunity and need for intervention. Develop proposals and bids for the EC&I discipline and contribute to multi‑disciplinary proposals. Qualifications Degree or similar qualification in a relevant engineering subject supported with significant postgraduate experience in electrical design and/or operation, maintenance and testing. Chartered Engineer or working towards IEng/CEng and a member of a relevant Engineering Institute. The ability and desire to assume a lead role in developing electrical deliverables and assessing assets under construction or in operation. Knowledge of design, construction and operation of power and energy projects. Proven understanding of the design process and ability to demonstrate working knowledge of brief/scope documents, design concepts, calculations and commissioning, operation, maintenance and testing of medium and high voltage equipment and systems.
