About The Role
We are seeking a Research Associate to join the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Leicester. This exciting role is part of the UK Space Agency‑funded project, a collaboration between the University and TWI Ltd, focused on pioneering space robotic welding technology for in‑orbit repair and assembly. You will lead research in areas such as digital twin development, metallurgy modelling, and prototype fabrication for an innovative welding end‑effector, contributing to the advancement of In‑Space Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM).
Working across the University of Leicester's main campus and Space Park Leicester, you will collaborate with world‑leading experts and industry partners to deliver cutting‑edge solutions. The role also involves supporting graduate students, presenting findings at international conferences, and contributing to publications and project reports. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact in a rapidly growing research area while engaging with a diverse and inspiring academic community.
About You
You will hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated expertise in welding or metallurgical process modelling, or in robotics, space systems, or digital twin development, is essential. A strong record of peer‑reviewed publications and experience in experimental or simulation‑based research relevant to advanced manufacturing or space systems will be expected.
You will bring excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and strong communication skills for presenting research to varied audiences. Familiarity with robotic end‑effector design, automation, or space manufacturing technologies is desirable.
