Head of Data Science Location: Greater London, United Kingdom (Remote) Company: BVGroup BVGroup brings over 80 years of expertise to every bet, delivering technology-driven betting and gaming experiences to a global audience. Our SaaS platform is fully developed and ready to deploy, requiring minimal setup and no complex configuration. Purpose of the Role As Head of Data Science you will be responsible for building and maintaining models that automate or improve decision‑making within the business. We are upscaling from a small team to a larger one, focusing on building the team, identifying new opportunities for Data Science to support the business, and ensuring our models perform well and are suitable for their use cases. Key Responsibilities Manage data science projects within the Business Intelligence (BI) domain, including models to detect welcome‑offer abusers, anomaly‑detection services, and renewal of automated Safer Gambling monitoring. Oversee the data science model development pipeline—from idea, through proof of concept and MVP, to fully productionised model with monitoring—alongside monitoring and performance of existing models. Identify new opportunities for Data Science to improve business performance, particularly through automating or enhancing account‑level decision‑making (e.g., bonus‑abuser detection). Line‑manage the Data Science team (currently two direct reports) while coaching, developing, and providing performance support. Collaborate closely with Data Engineering to coordinate model deployment and integration with both our platform and operational processes. Lead data science sprints and retrospectives, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, agile delivery, and cross‑functional communication. Essential Skills & Experience Strong hands‑on experience in data science, with the ability to engage directly with technical work while running the team day‑to‑day and guiding it toward strategic goals. Specific Attributes Expected Experience leading small data science teams in a commercial environment, defining project work and managing delivery, facilitating sprints and retrospectives, and coaching and developing staff. Track record of delivering important models and integrating them into business processes. Deep understanding of the full model lifecycle, from problem scoping and data exploration through to deployment, monitoring, and iteration. Strategic mindset with the ability to align data science initiatives to business goals, manage stakeholders, and communicate complex technical concepts. Expertise in machine learning and statistical modelling, especially with very large data volumes; proficiency in Python and data visualisation tools. Familiarity with modern data engineering and MLOps practices desirable. Excellent communication skills and a high level of written and spoken English.
