Senior/Principal Consultant - Surface Water Quality
WSP in the UK & Ireland is looking for a Senior/Principal Consultant in Surface Water Quality to join our rapidly expanding Water Quality and Catchment Management team. The role focuses on delivering sustainable solutions to the UK water sector and environmental regulators, protecting water environments through innovative problem‑solving and client delivery.
Location: UK (flexible; main offices in Newcastle‑upon‑Tyne, Cardiff, Manchester, Shrewsbury, London, Bristol or Glasgow – hybrid office‑home working).
Responsibilities
Water quality data analysis, conceptualisation and visualisation with clear communication.
Desk‑based investigations and interpretation of datasets.
Design and support field monitoring campaigns, including traditional and non‑traditional methods.
Delivery of technical reports and client presentations.
Winning new work and writing proposals for new projects.
Project and task management.
Act as a key member of our Sustainable Water Management team.
Qualifications
Background in Earth Sciences with working knowledge of Water Quality and Geochemistry/Environmental Chemistry.
Understanding of UK regulatory framework (WFD, EIA, etc.) and water quality protection measures.
Experience with water quality modelling tools (SAGIS, SIMCAT, InfoWorks, ICM, etc.).
Experience of WFD/EIA scoping, reviews and assessments for water/hydrology chapters.
Experience with water environment data collation, quality checking, assurance, and interpretation.
Experience of water quality permitting and completion or review of H1 and RQP assessments.
Strong conceptualisation skills; familiarity with source pathway receptor models and groundwater‑surface water interactions.
Field experience in sampling network design, risk assessment and data interpretation (river/groundwater sampling).
Knowledge of catchment management and agri‑environment schemes is desirable.
Qualifications: Degree‑level in geography, geology, geochemistry, earth/environmental science, civil engineering, or similar.
Optional higher degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., water quality, hydrogeochemistry).
Proven analytical skills, ability to analyse problems and develop novel solutions.
Proficiency in MS Office and GIS packages (ArcGIS or QGIS).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including capability to convey ideas through visualisations.
Ability to collaborate effectively in a team and to work independently as required.
