Medical Oncologist/ Clinician Scientist (1 fte)
The Department of Internal Oncology within the Medical Oncological Disciplines (MOD) cluster at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek invites applications for the position of Medical Oncologist/ Clinician Scientist (1 fte).
We are seeking a medical oncologist who will share responsibility for the care of patients receiving targeted therapy and immunotherapy for skin cancer or kidney cancer. The successful candidate will play a strategic and operational role in the development of novel therapeutic approaches, including the initiation and conduct of clinical trials. Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in research—whether preclinical, translational, and/or clinical—and be capable of establishing and maintaining an independent research group preferably focused on skin and/or kidney cancer.
The medical oncology cluster comprises 35 medical oncologists, working within dedicated multidisciplinary tumor groups. We collaborate closely with multiple research teams at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI). Several “twin” research programs are already in place, in which a clinician–scientist and a basic/translational scientist jointly lead research initiatives and develop integrated bench–bedside–bench studies. We also work intensively with the AVL Pharmacy, which houses the Biotherapeutics Unit, including six GMP clean rooms dedicated to the development and production of biologicals for clinical research.
Immunotherapy and precision medicine are two of the six research themes in which the NKI-AVL aims to achieve international excellence, and both play a central role within the cluster. In recent years, the institute has conducted extensive and successful research on neoadjuvant immunotherapy across multiple tumor types, as well as on the development of cell therapies for solid tumors. These efforts originated in patients with metastatic melanoma, which continues to serve as an invaluable model for advancing new treatment strategies. Our clinical and research environment is characterized by close multidisciplinary collaboration, frequent scientific and clinical discussion, patient-centered care, and a collegial working atmosphere with short communication lines. A full residency program in medical oncology is available.
Profile of the ideal candidate
We are looking for a medical oncologist who is energized by research aimed at developing innovative treatments, who is eager to assume clinical responsibility for complex diseases treated with novel therapeutics, and who will contribute actively to both clinical and basic/translational research. The candidate should be prepared to represent the NKI-AVL nationally and internationally in the future. We seek a versatile team player who can effectively connect and engage the various disciplines involved in these treatments.
What the NKI-AVL offers
This is a permanent appointment. The successful candidate will participate in the internal medicine on-call and supervisory rota. Employment conditions are in accordance with the AMS framework.
