Head of marketing
for a museum that is not a museum
ZAMU, one of the largest private museums in the world in the making, is opening soon. But do not expect a traditional museum experience.
We bring together the largest works, quite literally, by the biggest contemporary artists: John Chamberlain, Frank Stella, KAWS, and more, on an island just outside Amsterdam. Instead of a single curator, we hand that role to every visitor. Or maybe not, because you can also simply come to escape the city and enjoy the surrounding nature, the architecture, or unexpected experiences. We have no closing days and stay open until late in the evening.
ZAMU is not a museum. It is a destination. ZAMU is an art island.
We work with world class artists at the highest international level. So we are looking for someone who has proven they can operate at that level.
We have spent several years building the exhibition spaces. The first stone for the brand has been laid. As Head of Marketing, you can help expand this into a story that will remain relevant in the year 2126, both nationally and internationally.
Will you open ZAMU this summer?
As a freelance Head of Marketing, you define the strategy, build the brand, assemble your own team of communication specialists and lead them. Together, you translate a bold cultural idea into lasting recognition with broad public appeal. You lay the foundation for a world class institution and lead the marketing narrative toward the opening.
This is a senior role with autonomy, budget, and clear expectations. You have experience with similar trajectories in the Dutch cultural, hospitality, or entertainment sector.
Reporting: directly to the founders of ZAMU
Commitment: 3 days per week, freelance profile
Compensation: market competitive, aligned with seniority and impact
What you will do
Position ZAMU as a sustainable, international cultural brand
Develop the brand strategy, branding, and timeline toward the summer 2026 opening
Build and lead a freelance marketing and branding team
Define and execute marketing objectives and the marketing plan
Manage the marketing budget and monitor performance, reporting to the founders
Safeguard brand consistency and implement the ZAMU brand guide
Lead all marketing and communication channels, digital, print, website, PR, social media
Coordinate communication around exhibitions, public and educational programs
Develop media relations, partnerships, and merchandising
Track trends and innovations and translate them into marketing initiatives
We are looking for someone who wants to make this project a success with us. Someone willing to do what it takes along the way, even if we do not yet fully know what that means.
Who we are looking for
Experience with museum openings or comparable projects in the Dutch cultural, hospitality, or entertainment sector is a strong plus
5 to 10 years of experience in marketing strategy and leadership
Proven experience in brand building

Experience with OOH and PR driven marketing
Strategic thinker who is not afraid to be hands on
Comfortable with ambiguity and building from scratch
Fluent in Dutch or English, both is a plus
Affinity with art is welcome, not required
Based in or around Amsterdam, as regular on site presence is expected
What we offer
The opportunity to help build one of the most ambitious cultural projects in the world
High autonomy and real responsibility
A small, sharp team that you get to assemble
