Freelance Financial Controller – Payroll & Personnel Costs

Our client is looking for an experienced Financial Controller to take ownership of personnel cost control within a dynamic corporate finance environment. In this role, you will be part of a dedicated OPEX controlling team within the broader Finance & Accounting function.

The Finance & Accounting department operates as a center of expertise for financial processes, ensuring accurate financial close, reporting, and governance across multiple business units. As Financial Controller, you will play a key role in safeguarding the financial integrity of workforce-related expenses across several entities.

The Role

You will be responsible for the financial oversight and control of personnel expenses across multiple operating entities. From distribution operations to retail environments, you ensure that all payroll-related financial flows are accurately recorded, analyzed, and reported.

You will coordinate the periodic closing process, consolidating figures from different entities into a complete and reliable financial picture. Acting as a central point of contact, you collaborate closely with other Financial Controllers and Business Controllers to provide insight and financial guidance.

Key Responsibilities Lead the monthly and periodic closing process for personnel expenses across multiple business entities. Ensure accuracy and completeness of P&L and balance sheet accounts related to payroll and workforce costs. Perform in-depth analysis of payroll expenses, identifying trends, variances, and risks. Act as the financial liaison for controllers across various business units. Contribute to continuous improvement of financial reporting and cost control processes.

Your Profile

You are a seasoned Financial Controller with strong analytical capabilities and experience in a structured, corporate environment. While familiarity with payroll processes is beneficial, this role focuses on financial control and analysis rather than payroll operations (which are managed by an external service provider).

You combine financial expertise with strong stakeholder management skills and are comfortable operating in a complex organization.

Requirements Master’s degree in Finance, Business Economics, or a related field. At least 5 years of experience in Finance (e.g., Financial Control, Financial Accounting, or Audit). Solid background in financial control and reporting; experience with payroll-related cost structures is an advantage. Experience with Power BI and/or KNIME is considered a plus. Strong analytical mindset with the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights. Confident communicator who can effectively partner with stakeholders across functions. Curious and detail-oriented, with a proactive and independent working style. Fluent in Dutch and English, both written and spoken.

This position is ideal for an experienced Financial Controller (not a payroll administrator) who has worked in a corporate setting, excels at detailed financial analysis, and is comfortable managing multiple stakeholders. Knowledge of payroll structures is advantageous, but operational payroll processing is handled by an external partner.
