PCU RN Job Details

Unit Details:
29 beds (expandable to 37), 1:3-5 nurse-to-patient ratios, supported by Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) and Health Unit Coordinators (HUCs)
Patient Population:
CKD, diabetes (DM), congestive heart failure (CHF), UTI, GI bleeds, respiratory failure/COPD/pneumonia, sepsis, and more
PCU Registered Nurse Qualifications
Active RN license in Virginia or compact state (required for PCU nurse jobs)
BLS and ACLS certifications (required)
Minimum 1 year of recent RN experience (required)
2 years of recent PCU/Stepdown experience (preferred)
Travel nursing experience (preferred)
Advanced cardiac rhythm interpretation and cardiac drips knowledge (preferred)
Proficiency in critical thinking, communication, time management, electronic documentation, oxygen therapy, medication administration, wound care, vital signs, IV insertion, NG tube management, and early recognition of patient deterioration
Must pass dysrhythmia exam (study guide provided)
PCU RN Responsibilities
Perform initial and ongoing patient assessments; develop and implement individualized care plans
Safely administer medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards
Coordinate patient care and communicate effectively with departments, patients, and families
Float to Medical/Surgical and Telemetry units as needed
Utilize telemetry monitors, wound vacs, warming blankets, IV and PCA pumps
Monitor and manage patients with multi-system organ failure and complex medical conditions
Advocate for patient safety and participate in quality improvement initiatives
Support patients and families coping with illness or injury; collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams
Maintain accurate electronic documentation using EPIC, PerfectServe, and Dimensions
Demonstrate professionalism, resilience, and adaptability in a fast-paced healthcare environment
