Principal Level P1 - Tarro Public School Tarro Public School is proudly located at the meeting point of the Wonnarua, Awabakal and Worimi Peoples, on the fringes of the Hunter Wetlands National Park and adjacent to the Hunter River. The school has an enrolment of 120 students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, including 30% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and 3% students with English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D). The Family Occupation and Education Index (FOEI) is 133. The school will establish its first support class in 2026.

Tarro Public School is staffed by a dedicated and highly qualified team, committed to improving educational outcomes for every student. Tarro Public School is a proud member of the Gateway Learning Community, which consists of six primary schools, one School for Specific Purposes and one high school, fostering strong partnerships that support shared professional learning and continuity of practice.

The school currently has 7 permanent teaching positions, in addition to 3 executive roles, and a range of part-time specialist support teachers and support staff. All teaching staff meet the professional requirements for teaching in NSW public schools.

Tarro Public School maintains a strong focus on Explicit Teaching, underpinned by daily reviews, effective feedback and high expectations. Staff work collaboratively to sustain a culture of learning and growth where every student is supported to be brave, innovative, collaborative, determined and proud learners. This partnership with families begins before school through the JOEYS (Jump On into Early Years Schooling) transition programme, which supports children and their families as they transition into primary school, fostering a successful and confident start to school life.

Tarro Public School is an active member of the Maitland Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and participates in both Newcastle City Council and Maitland City Council initiatives. The school is proudly supported by community organisations and local businesses.

Selection Criteria

Approval to teach. In addition to the general selection criteria;

Demonstrated ability to lead a positive, culturally responsive and inclusive school culture through authentic partnerships with all members of the school community to enhance wellbeing and engagement.

A visible instructional leader who effectively leads excellence in pedagogy and curriculum implementation, ensuring that school programs and initiatives cater to the diverse needs of all students while aligned to system priorities.

Strategic leadership that fosters a collaborative culture, promoting ongoing professional learning and growth among teaching staff.

General Selection Criteria

High level educational leadership with the skills to lead and manage a complex public school focused on the delivery of high quality education.

Ability to lead and manage rigorous and inclusive whole school teaching and learning programmes.

High level communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build positive relationships and engage all levels of the school and educational community.

Ability to lead and manage the development and performance of staff to improve teaching and learning.

Ability to plan systems and manage resources effectively and equitably to enhance teaching and learning.

Capacity to lead staff in implementing the Department's Aboriginal education policy and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Conditions An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

The classification and remuneration of our school principals is based on school complexity, as measured through each school’s RAM allocation. As part of the ongoing application of the new structure a review of thresholds and outcomes will occur on an annual basis. The principal classification for this school is Principal Level P1 for 2025 and Principal Level P1 for 2026.
