General Manager Community Strengthening - Yarra City Council Yarra City Council is one of Melbourne’s most diverse and community focused inner metropolitan municipalities known for its strong commitment to social equity, creativity and civic participation. Home to vibrant neighbourhoods such as Richmond, Collingwood, Fitzroy and Carlton North, Yarra is defined by its rich cultural heritage, active community life and deep engagement with social and environmental justice.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the General Manager Community Strengthening provides strategic and operational leadership across an integrated portfolio that includes ageing and disability, children youth and family services, community development, equity and inclusion, libraries, arts, events and major community initiatives. The role is central to ensuring community impact is consistently at the heart of the organisation’s priorities and that Council continues to respond effectively to the needs of vulnerable and at risk groups.

This is a critical appointment following the retirement of a highly regarded executive who built trusted relationships, delivered complex community outcomes and served as a conscience at the executive table. The incoming General Manager will lead a capable and committed leadership group and will inherit a portfolio operating at the centre of some of Victoria’s most complex social issues including public housing renewal, harm minimisation services, First Peoples partnerships and the revitalisation of key precincts such as Victoria Street.

The ideal candidate is a strategic doer with exceptional political acumen resilience and a genuine passion for community. You will bring the ability to move effectively between high level strategy and practical delivery and will be comfortable operating in high profile environments with significant stakeholder and media interest. Experience advocating for vulnerable communities is essential alongside a proven ability to partner with councillors, government agencies, community organisations and service partners. Local government experience is strongly preferred given the pace and visibility of decision making although candidates from related sectors with comparable complexity will be considered.
