Job Description
Chief Executive Officer
Location: Flexible within Australia
Employment Type: Full-time, ongoing (0.8FTE possible)
Reports to: IGPTN Board of Directors
Identified Position: Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants only
About IGPTN
The Indigenous General Practice Trainee Network (IGPTN) is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisation that creates culturally responsive and safe spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GP and RG Trainees, as well as supporting GP/RG Fellows and developing innovative strategies for attracting the next generation of GPs/RGs. IGPTN is grounded in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander governance, self‑determination and cultural responsiveness, and is recognised as a peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GPs that blends clinical education with cultural connection.
IGPTN delivers two annual face‑to‑face workshops that integrate exam preparation, yarning, mentoring and peer connection. These gatherings are described by participants as culturally safe and empowering, helping Trainees feel part of an extended family. Weekly online study groups provide small‑group learning with culturally responsive facilitation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Fellows and Medical Educators.
IGPTN also represents our members nationally with RACGP, ACRRM, GPRA and the Department of Health to improve culturally responsive and safe pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GP and RG Trainees.
Purpose: We empower, support and advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander General Practice and Rural Generalist Trainees to connect, thrive and lead. Together we will create culturally safe and responsive healthcare achieving equity and self‑determination through mentorship and positive role models that inspire future generations to become GPs.
Vision: A future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander General Practitioners and Rural Generalists lead culturally strong, equitable healthcare and inspire healthy communities across Australia.
Identified Role – Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Applicants Only

IGPTN considers this a genuine occupational requirement under relevant provisions of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 and state/territory equal opportunity legislation, as the role provides cultural leadership within an Indigenous‑led organisation.

This is a hands‑on CEO role—well suited to a leader who enjoys both strategy and active involvement in day‑to‑day operations. As a small but growing organisation, the CEO will work closely with team members, partners and the Board to deliver on IGPTN’s purpose.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the implementation of IGPTN’s strategic plan (2025-2030), vision, and organisational priorities.
Provide strong organisational leadership, including finance, HR, governance, risk management and compliance.
Maintain a positive, culturally safe and fun team culture.
Strengthen partnerships with trainees, fellows and key stakeholders.
Ensure robust grant management, financial accountability, reporting and sustainable funding pathways.
Represent IGPTN nationally along with the Chairperson, influencing policy, advocacy and sector reforms related to GP training and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GP workforce development.
Provide the Board with high‑quality strategic advice, reporting and governance support with support from the Company Secretary.
