Job Title: Electrical Design Engineer
Location: Essex (with occasional travel to suppliers and manufacturing partners)

OverviewOur client, a leading medical devices manufacturer, is seeking a talented Electrical Design Engineer to support the design, development, and improvement of electrically driven medical equipment and associated manufacturing systems. The successful candidate will work within a regulated environment, ensuring electrical designs meet stringent quality, safety, and compliance requirements including ISO 13485 and applicable medical device directives.
Key ResponsibilitiesElectrical Design & Development
  • Produce detailed electrical designs for medical devices, test equipment, and automated production machinery.

  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and BOMs.

  • Specify components including sensors, drives, power supplies, PCB interfaces, safety devices, and control hardware.

  • Support prototype builds and participate in design verification and validation activities.


Engineering Support
  • Provide technical support for production, quality, and NPI teams during equipment builds and troubleshooting.

  • Investigate and resolve electrical design issues, implementing root cause analysis and corrective actions.

  • Support equipment upgrades, modifications, and change control processes.


Compliance & Documentation
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant standards (EN/IEC electrical standards, Machinery Directive, EMC, Low Voltage Directive).

  • Contribute to risk assessments (FMEA, DFMEA) and ensure robust design documentation.

  • Support regulatory submissions by providing clear and complete technical design data.


Project Collaboration
  • Work closely with mechanical, software, and process engineering teams to deliver integrated system designs.

  • Liaise with external suppliers, panel builders, and manufacturing partners.

  • Participate in FAT, SAT, and equipment commissioning where electrical involvement is required.


Required Skills & Experience

Technical Skills

  • Strong background in electrical design for machinery, equipment, or high-precision devices.

  • Experience producing electrical drawings using tools such as EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar.

  • Understanding of circuit protection, low-voltage systems, sensors, actuators, and industrial components.

  • Familiarity with EMC considerations, grounding, and safe electrical design practices.

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, wiring harness layouts, and pneumatic diagrams.


Industry Experience

  • Experience in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, cleanroom equipment, or other regulated/high-reliability sectors.

  • Exposure to ISO 13485, GMP, or FDA 21 CFR Part 820 environments is advantageous.


Professional Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical mindset.

  • Excellent attention to detail and documentation discipline.

  • Ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree, HNC, or HND in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Mechatronics, or related field.

  • Experience with functional safety or electrical safety standards.

  • Knowledge of PLC hardware, embedded systems, or PCB design is beneficial (but not essential).

  • Familiarity with medical device lifecycle, verification/validation, and risk management processes.
