About Africa Centre Council for Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta (CAAC), operating as Africa Centre, is the largest pan African non‑profit organization in western Canada, serving as a community hub that provides programs and services from a place of cultural awareness and competency to the families in our diverse community. We acknowledge the diversity of our cultural background as a source of the strength that brings capacity and competencies to shape a thriving community in Alberta. We have a strong African indigenous cultural foundation incorporated across our programs and services.

Position Overview The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the Strategic Plan and directions set by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will meet the organization’s mission and goals by providing leadership to staff to ensure programs and services are delivered with excellence to meet the needs of the African descent/diaspora community while working within the values of the organization, raising the profile and awareness of the organization, initiating fund development activities to ensure financial sustainability, and supporting the work of the African Multicultural Community Centre.

The key areas for the Executive Director to focus on in the next year include:

Growth of programs and services.

Collaborate to build more relationships and partnerships with organizations resulting in more collaborative training.

Inspire, motivate, and empower the staff to do the best work to provide exceptional service to the community.

Key Responsibilities Leadership

Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization.

In addition to the Chair of the Board, act as a spokesperson for the organization.

Nurture and preserve a healthy workplace culture that’s aligned with the organization’s values and beliefs.

Human Resources

Establish a positive, respectful, and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations.

Oversee the recruitment and retention of staff to have the qualifications and support to help further the organization’s mission.

Supervise and mentor leadership staff to be effective leaders, and ensure programs and services are delivered with excellence and goals are met.

Finance and Fund Development

Work with staff and the Board to prepare a comprehensive budget and secure adequate funding for the operations.

Research funding sources, oversee the development of fundraising efforts, participate in fundraising activities, and write funding proposals to increase and diversify the funds.

Oversee the implementation of the financial policies, procedures, and practices.

Operational Management

Develop an operational plan that incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction.

Oversee the efficient and effective day‑to‑day operation.

Support the development of all organizational policies including but not limited to governance, financial, and human resources and prepare procedures to implement these policies; review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate.

Program

Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the programs and services.

Ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization’s mission, values, and reflect the priorities of the Board.

Monitor the day‑to‑day delivery of the programs and services to maintain or improve quality.

Identify community needs and work with staff to develop creative strategies to meet the needs.

Government and Community relations

Establish effective relationships, collaboration, and communicate effectively with community groups, funders, elected officials, and other organizations to achieve the goals of the organization.

Represent the organization and community to the media and act as spokesperson for the organization.

Advocate in the community to advance the work of the organization and the African descent/diaspora community.

Qualifications

Minimum University degree in a relevant field of study and a Post Graduate Degree is preferred.

A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive senior management experience in a non profit organization.

Strong financial acumen with budgeting, financial reporting, managing audits, and ensuring fiscal sustainability.

Leadership and management abilities to be a motivating and effective supervisor for a non‑profit organization.

Experience to be an engaging and effective public speaker and engage media.

Proven track record in developing and managing fundraising activities to support major projects and programs.

Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation applicable to the non profit sector organizations.

An understanding of issues regarding the African descent/diaspora community in Alberta.

Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities relating to the mission of the organization.
