Do you want to ensure a delightful shopping experience for millions of Amazon.com customers every day? The Intelligent Hosting (ICON) team is expanding into Australia and is looking for a System Development Manager who is passionate about leading DevOps initiatives for Amazon's e‑commerce platform technologies that host Amazon's global websites.
The ICON team hosts Amazon websites and backend platform services that power the customer experience. We abstract and centralize infrastructure management from service teams, bring agility to business processes, and operate hundreds of Tier‑1 services on behalf of our internal customers. ICON is an early adopter of Amazon's product offerings and automates the management and operational activities for developers to strengthen services' security, availability, and efficiency, enabling developers to innovate for Amazon’s end customers.
The ICON team is located within the Intelligent Control (ICC) organization, which owns the connectivity of our worldwide websites and other consumer experiences such as Kindle, Amazon Video, and Alexa to the internet. ICC also ensures the highest level of availability, security, and privacy for the web services that power these experiences worldwide.
In this role, you will lead a team of System Development Engineers and Support Engineers in Sydney. Our global team also has sites in Seattle, New York, Dublin, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. You will influence the building, automating, and operating of Amazon’s current and next‑generation Intelligent Cloud Hosting technologies used to manage a highly distributed hosting infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team that drives organizational standards for operational excellence and resiliency.
- Establish strong relationships with internal and external partners and peer stakeholders to understand and meet their needs while operating existing systems at a high level of Operational Excellence.
- Lead the team through large‑scale incident management and escalations to resolve outages and communicate with a global audience and senior leadership.
- Develop and maintain a culture of innovation and operational excellence within the team.
- Manage the design and development of next‑generation platform orchestration and automation.
- Hire, develop, and retain a world‑class engineering team that meets Amazon’s high bar.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of systems engineering and operations leadership in an Internet service or leading‑edge IT organization.
- 5+ years of managing system or software development teams.
- 7+ years of relevant hands‑on systems engineering and administrative work in networking, storage systems, and operating systems.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Experience with agile software development methodology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence.
- Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems).
- Experience with Agile engineering practices such as Kanban and continuous delivery.
- Experience with AWS platforms, services, and design patterns.
