Job Description
This position reports to the Director of Clinical Services. It is responsible for the provision and supervision of comprehensive quality therapy services (recreational, art or music) for psychiatric inpatients. The Recreation Therapist Coordinator oversees the development and delivery of therapeutic recreation services across six inpatient behavioral health units. This role includes clinical supervision, program development, and administrative leadership to ensure high‑quality, patient‑centered care. Responsibilities include designing and coordinating therapeutic recreation programs tailored to diverse patient populations, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to integrate recreation therapy into treatment plans, supervising and mentoring experiential therapists, ensuring program appropriateness, conducting performance reviews, facilitating professional development, ensuring adherence to hospital policies and regulatory standards, and providing training to promote a recreational therapy program suitable for the behavioral health population.
Education
Education: Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Art, Music or Recreation Therapy or related field.
Experience
Experience: Three years of experience in therapeutic programs in the field of behavioral or mental health.
Licenses/Certificates
Certification in Basic Life Support required. Certification by the Board of Music Therapy (MT‑BC); or Art therapist registration (ATR) by the American Art Therapy Association; or Credentialed as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Certification in de‑escalation training within the orientation period for employment.
Additional Job Description
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and 3 years of experience in recreation, music, art therapy, or a related field; or a Master’s degree in a related field and 1 year of experience. Credentialed as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Music Therapy position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Credentialed as a Music Therapist by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). Art Therapy position requires a master’s degree from an accredited institution. Credentialed as an Art Therapist by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATBC) and registration by ATR. Strong interpersonal skills, creative, flexible, and resourceful. Ability to work collaboratively with care team members at all levels of the organization.
Certifications/Licensure
Certification by the Board of Music Therapy (MT‑BC); or Art therapist registration (ATR) by the American Art Therapy Association; or Credentialed as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider. If external hire: within the first 30 days of employment. De‑escalation training within the first 6 months of employment.
