Job Summary
As a Robotics Engineer specializing in warehouse automation systems, you will design, build, program, and optimize autonomous robotic systems for high-density environments. This involves integrating mechanical, electrical, software, and control systems to ensure reliable material handling, navigation, and integration with warehouse management systems (WMS) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) software. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, software developers, and logistics experts, to deliver scalable automation solutions that reduce costs, improve throughput, and adapt to dynamic demands. Typical employers include automation firms, logistics companies, and e-commerce organizations implementing AS/RS.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
•
Design and Development: Conceptualize and design autonomous robotic systems, including chassis, actuators, drive modules, sensors (e.g., LiDAR, cameras for navigation), and end-of-arm tooling for material handling. Perform design calculations to optimize for load capacity (up to 1500kg), speed, and energy efficiency in multi-directional movement.
•
Programming and Control Systems: Develop and implement software algorithms for robot control, path planning, collision avoidance, and autonomous navigation. Use languages like Python, C++, or ROS (Robot Operating System) to program systems for real-time decision-making and integration with WMS/ERP.
•
Integration and Testing: Integrate sensors, actuators, and communication systems (e.g., Wi-Fi, RFID for inventory tracking) into robotic systems. Build prototypes, conduct simulations, and perform on-site testing for reliability in warehouse conditions, including debugging issues like motion inaccuracies or system failures.
•
System Optimization and Maintenance: Analyze performance data to improve system efficiency, such as reducing cycle times or enhancing scalability (e.g., adding robots dynamically). Provide on-site support for installation, calibration, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of deployed systems.
•
Collaboration and Project Management: Work with teams to align robotic designs with warehouse layouts, racking structures, and automation stacks (e.g., conveyors, AMRs). Review designs, estimate costs, and ensure compliance with safety standards like ISO 10218 for industrial robots.
•
Research and Innovation: Conduct feasibility studies on advanced features like AI-driven orchestration or integration with vertical lifts. Stay updated on trends in warehouse automation to propose upgrades for density, flexibility, and cost reduction.
Required Skills and Qualifications
•
Technical Skills: Proficiency in robotics software (ROS, MATLAB/Simulink), programming (Python, C++, Java), and control systems (PLC, SCADA). Experience with mechanical design tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and sensors/actuators for navigation and load handling.
•
Domain Knowledge: Understanding of warehouse automation principles, including AS/RS, racking systems, and robotic movement dynamics. Familiarity with integration protocols (e.g., OPC UA, MQTT) and safety protocols.
•
Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and teamwork abilities. Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-engineers and manage projects under deadlines.
•
Other Requirements: Willingness to travel for on-site installations (up to 25-50% in some roles). Physical ability to work in warehouse environments, including lifting up to 50 lbs and working at heights.
Education and Experience
•
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., Certified Robotics Engineer from SME) are preferred for senior roles.
•
Experience: 3-5 years in robotics or automation engineering, with at least 1-2 years focused on warehouse systems like shuttles, AMRs, or AS/RS. Hands-on experience with similar systems (e.g., via internships or projects) is highly valued. Entry-level roles may require relevant coursework or capstone projects.
