Job Description
Senior Electromagnetics Engineer – Axial Flux Motors (Electric Propulsion)
Location:
Onsite
Employment Type:
Full-Time
Experience Level:
Senior
Industry:
Electric Propulsion, Aerospace, Advanced Electric Mobility
About the Role We are seeking a
Senior Electromagnetics Engineer
to lead the electromagnetic design and optimization of
high-power axial flux electric motors (35–450 kW)
for next-generation
electric propulsion systems . This role is critical to achieving industry-leading
power density, efficiency, thermal performance, and reliability
in demanding propulsion environments.
You will own the electromagnetic architecture from concept through production support, working cross-functionally with mechanical, thermal, power electronics, and systems engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead
electromagnetic design and optimization
of axial flux motors for electric propulsion applications.
Develop motor topologies optimized for
high torque density, efficiency, and fault tolerance
across 35–450 kW operating range.
Perform
2D/3D electromagnetic simulations
(steady-state, transient, harmonic, and loss analysis).
Optimize
magnet selection, slot/pole combinations, winding configurations , and flux paths.
Conduct
electromagnetic-thermal trade studies
in collaboration with thermal engineers.
Analyze and mitigate
torque ripple, cogging torque, acoustic noise, and demagnetization risks .
Support
DFMEA, design reviews, and validation testing , including correlation of simulation results with test data.
Collaborate closely with
power electronics
teams on inverter compatibility, switching harmonics, and control strategies.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical standards and best practices.
Required Qualifications
MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering , Electromagnetics, or a closely related field.
5+ years
of hands-on experience in electric motor electromagnetic design.
Demonstrated experience designing
axial flux motors
(radial flux experience alone is insufficient).
Strong expertise in
high-power electric machines
(≥35 kW), preferably for propulsion.
Advanced proficiency in electromagnetic simulation tools such as:
ANSYS Maxwell / Motor-CAD
JMAG
COMSOL Multiphysics
Deep understanding of:
Magnetic materials and permanent magnets (NdFeB, SmCo)
Loss mechanisms (iron, copper, magnet, stray losses)
Saturation, demagnetization, and fault conditions
Experience taking designs from
concept to prototype and production support .
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Experience in
electric aircraft, eVTOL, marine propulsion, or high-performance EVs .
Knowledge of
DO-160, DO-254, or similar aerospace qualification standards .
Familiarity with
multiphysics optimization
(EM + thermal + mechanical).
Exposure to
manufacturing constraints
for axial flux machines (lamination stacking, magnet placement, winding automation).
Background in
IPMSM or PMSM control interactions .
What We Offer
Opportunity to design
state-of-the-art electric propulsion systems
at the forefront of electrification.
High technical ownership and influence over core product architecture.
Collaborative, fast-moving engineering environment.
Competitive compensation, equity (if applicable), and comprehensive benefits.
