Job Description
About Stolt-Nielsen:
Stolt-Nielsen is a family-founded global leader in bulk-liquid and chemical logistics, transportation, and storage, known for its commitment to safety, service excellence, and innovation. At the Stolt-Nielsen Digital Innovation Centre, we bring this legacy into the future — building smarter systems, driving digital transformation, and shaping what's next for the world of logistics. Here, you’re encouraged to think boldly, challenge convention, and help move today’s products toward tomorrow’s possibilities.
Job Description:
About the Role:
As Head of Design, you will lead and grow the design discipline within our Digital Innovation Centre. You will manage a compact team of UX/UI specialists — including a UX / UI Architect and UX / UI Designers — while remaining involved in the craft yourself. This is a leadership role with a hands-on component: you set the vision and standards, but you also roll up your sleeves when it matters.
You will own the design strategy across Stolt-Nielsen’s digital products and platforms, ensuring that user experience is a first-class consideration in everything we build. This means defining how we do design — from research methodologies and design system governance to handoff processes and usability validation — and making sure these practices are embedded across our product teams. In our matrix organization, your designers collaborate with various business-aligned product and project teams, while you focus on capability building, mentoring, quality standards, and ensuring a consistent, cohesive design language across the portfolio. Given the size of the team, you will also directly contribute to design work — particularly on strategic initiatives, complex user journeys, and setting the direction for our design system.
You will champion design thinking across the organization, raising design maturity and building awareness of how good UX drives business outcomes. You will partner closely with Engineering Managers, the Architecture team, and Product leadership to ensure design has a seat at the table in every product decision.
At Stolt-Nielsen, we take Digital seriously. We invest in our teams through training and mentoring and enable them with the required tools to work in a modern way (MacBook, Figma, analytics tooling). As we are further building up our engineering practice, there is ample room for you to contribute, take initiative and shape the future of our ways of working and technology landscape.
What You’ll Do:
Lead, coach, and develop the design team — managing performance, career growth, and day-to-day priorities for UX / UI Architects and Designers.
Define and own the UX strategy and design vision across Stolt-Nielsen’s digital portfolio, ensuring consistency, usability, and accessibility.
Directly contribute to design work on strategic or high-complexity initiatives — including user research, journey mapping, wireframing, and prototyping.
Establish and govern the design system and component library (Figma, Storybook), ensuring it scales with our growing product landscape.
Set standards for design quality, handoff processes, and collaboration between designers and front-end engineers.
Champion user research practices — defining when and how we conduct usability testing, A/B testing, and analytics-driven design decisions.
Collaborate with Engineering Managers, Architecture, and Product leadership to ensure design is integrated into delivery planning and technical decision-making.
Drive design maturity across the organization through training, evangelism, and embedding design thinking into product development processes.
Partner with HR and leadership to drive recruitment, onboarding, and employee engagement within the design discipline.
Oversee and priorities the design backlog for your vertical (e.g., design system improvements, shared patterns, research tooling, accessibility audits).
What You’ll Bring:
Proven leadership experience managing and growing a design team, even if small.
Deep expertise in user-centered design methodologies, design systems, and end-to-end UX processes — from discovery to validation.
A strong portfolio demonstrating both strategic design leadership and hands-on craft across complex digital products.
Proficiency in Figma and modern design collaboration tools; experience with Storybook or equivalent component documentation tools.
Understanding of front-end development constraints and how design interacts with frameworks like React or Angular.
Experience with user analytics, A/B testing, and data-informed design decisions (e.g., PostHog, Hotjar, or similar).
Excellent communication, facilitation, and storytelling skills — able to present design rationale to technical and business audiences alike.
Passion for mentoring, growing people, and building a thriving design culture.
Strategic mindset with a willingness to stay hands-on; you balance vision-setting with craft excellence.
Must Have Skills:
10+ years of professional experience in UX / Product Design, with at least 2 years in a leadership or head-of role.
Proven track record of building and scaling design practices within a product or technology organization.
Strong proficiency in Figma and knowledge of modern component-based design approaches (atomic design, design tokens).
Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design principles.
Experience designing for enterprise-grade or B2B digital products.
Fluent in English (spoken and written).
