Mechanical Design Engineer (Fusion 360) – Custom Vehicle Parts

Role Description

We are hiring a contract Mechanical Design Engineer to work on custom vehicle part design using Fusion 360. You will take existing CAD (often derived from 3D scans and provided as Fusion/STEP) and make the necessary modifications to create parts that are:

- visually finished (clean trims/bezels/duct details when needed) - fit tolerant (accounts for real-world bodywork variations, fiberglass/composites) - manufacturing-ready for outsourced 3D printing and/or CNC

Qualifications

- Strong proficiency in Design Engineering and Product Design, with experience in developing detailed and precise designs - Expertise in Mechanical Engineering and Machine Design, with the ability to create functional and practical custom vehicle parts - Proficiency with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools, with a focus on Fusion 360 (solid modeling, assemblies; comfortable editing imported geometry) - Able to work with STEP/IGES and repair/clean bodies when required - Understanding of tolerances, fitment, fastening, and fabrication realities - DFM for outsourced manufacturing (3D print/CNC) - Experience in the automotive or restoration industry is a plus

Responsibilities

Modify and refine existing CAD in Fusion 360 (incl. imported STEP bodies)

Design parts such as:

- vent/duct surrounds, mesh/grille inserts, trim bezels, covers - brackets, mounts, adapters, small housings - templates/jigs for fabrication

Create practical mounting methods (tabs, bosses, slots, heat-set insert locations, hidden fasteners)

Build in appropriate clearances/tolerances for imperfect surfaces and finishing/paint

Prepare final deliverables:

- Fusion 360 source + STEP - print-ready STL/3MF - CNC-friendly geometry when needed

Iterate quickly based on fit/feedback (v1 → test fit → v2)

Nice-to-have

- Surfacing skills (clean blends, edge breaks, consistent radii) - Experience with 3D print processes (SLA/SLS/MJF/FDM) and post-processing (primer/paint) - Any automotive/custom fabrication exposure
