The Alt Text Writer ensures accessibility for sight-impaired learners or learners who are unable to visually identify images by writing accurate and descriptive alt text (alternative text) that can be read by a screen reader. The successful candidate will have working knowledge of WCAG 2.0 guidelines and experience writing alt text for images to improve digital accessibility.
Responsibilities
Write alt text for all images in a lesson and edit existing alt text as needed.
Write/generate Aria labels for equations and MathML.
Record all alt text, whether newly written or pre-existing, in an agreed-upon format.
Use AI-based alt text generation tools responsibly to support alt text creation.
Use the provided project management tools to track and record work status.
Review alt text for accessibility, make revisions as needed, and record changes.
Copyedit to ensure grammatically correct and stylistically consistent content.
Proofread for punctuation, spelling, and consistency.
Follow client style guides, APA, and The Chicago Manual of Style.
Ensure the content is appropriate for an American English audience.
Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to use AI-based alt text generation tools critically and responsibly, with strong editorial judgment to ensure accuracy, accessibility compliance, and inclusive language.
Prior experience writing alt text for images in educational content. Nice to have 3 to 5 years of professional proofreading or copyediting experience.
Master’s degree in English, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Experience working with Learning Management System (LMS) platforms.
Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 guidelines and Section 508 compliance.
3 to 5 years of experience in K–12 editorial processes and workflows.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Docs/Sheets.
Ability to multitask effectively and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Ability to use online meeting software such as Zoom and Google Meet.
