Job Description
About the Role
Meril is developing next-generation surgical robotic systems currently in clinical trials in India and under development for US markets. We are seeking a
UI/UX Design Engineer
to design intuitive, safe, and high-performance user interfaces for surgeons operating in the Operating Room (OR).
This role is critical to ensuring our robotic console interface delivers precision, clarity, and confidence under high-stakes clinical environments. You will collaborate closely with robotics, computer vision, clinical, regulatory, and usability teams to design interfaces that meet global medical device standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. User Experience Design for Surgical Console
Design intuitive, surgeon-centred workflows for robotic-assisted surgical procedures.
Create wireframes, interaction flows, prototypes, and high-fidelity UI designs for touchscreen-based desktop applications (Qt/C++).
Optimize real-time data visualization, alerts, controls, and system feedback for high-pressure OR environments.
Ensure usability under sterile, time-sensitive, and cognitively demanding conditions.
2. Human Factors & Usability Engineering
Apply Human Factors Engineering (HFE) principles to minimize use-related risks.
Conduct contextual inquiry, task analysis, usability testing, and validation studies.
Contribute to formative and summative usability documentation aligned with:
IEC 62304
ISO 13485
FDA Usability Engineering Guidance
Support risk analysis related to UI-driven hazards.
3. Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with:
Robotics engineers (control systems & feedback loops)
Computer vision teams (image overlays, visualization)
Clinical teams (surgeon workflows and feedback)
Regulatory and Quality teams (compliance documentation)
Usability engineering teams (validation & verification)
4. Design System & Interface Standards
Develop and maintain UI design guidelines specific to surgical robotics.
Ensure consistency across modules, tools, and visualization layers.
Design for performance, clarity, and safety—not aesthetics alone.
Required Qualifications
3–5 years of professional experience in UI/UX design.
Experience designing for
desktop applications (Qt/C++ environments preferred) .
Strong portfolio demonstrating complex workflow design (medical, industrial, aviation, automotive, or other high-risk systems preferred).
Solid understanding of:
Human Factors Engineering
Usability testing methodologies
Risk-aware interface design
Familiarity with medical device standards:
IEC 62304
ISO 13485
FDA usability engineering process
Experience working in cross-functional engineering teams.
Proficiency in tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or similar.
Strong documentation and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing for:
Surgical systems
Robotics interfaces
Real-time control systems
Imaging-heavy applications
Experience in clinical trial support environments.
Understanding of OR workflows and sterile field constraints.
Exposure to custom robotics platforms.
What Makes This Role Unique
Direct impact on surgeon performance and patient outcomes.
Opportunity to shape UI standards for next-generation surgical robotics.
Work at the intersection of robotics, AI, computer vision, and human-centered design.
Involvement in systems being prepared for US regulatory pathways.
