Floatex Solar Private Limited is India’s leading floating solar solution provider, having deployed over 1 GW of floating solar capacity across projects with NHPC, NTPC, SJVN, and other major utilities.
Site safety is paramount given the unique hazards of working on and around water bodies, involving marine operations, heavy lifting, electrical installations, and working at heights.
Role Summary
The Safety Officer will be responsible for ensuring a safe working environment at Floatex Solar project sites. This role involves implementing and enforcing safety protocols specific to floating solar installations, conducting risk assessments, training site workers, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving a zero-incident safety culture across all site operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor site-specific Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) plans for floating solar installation projects.
- Conduct daily site safety inspections, toolbox talks, and safety audits to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Prepare and maintain Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA) documents for all site activities including water-based operations, block casting, float assembly, anchoring, mooring, cable laying, and electrical commissioning.
- Ensure all personnel on site are equipped with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including life jackets, harnesses, helmets, and safety shoes.
- Enforce water safety protocols including boat operation safety, swim proficiency checks, rescue equipment readiness, and emergency response procedures for man-overboard situations.
- Investigate all incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions; prepare detailed incident reports with root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action plans.
- Conduct regular safety induction and training sessions for all new workers, subcontractors, and visitors arriving at site.
- Ensure compliance with the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Act, Factories Act, Indian Electricity Rules, and all applicable state and central safety regulations.
- Maintain safety documentation including permits to work (PTW), hot work permits, confined space entry permits, and lifting plans.
- Coordinate with the Project Manager and site team to ensure safety considerations are integrated into daily work planning and method statements.
- Monitor and ensure proper storage and handling of materials including HDPE floats, ferrocement components, anchors, mooring ropes, and electrical equipment.
- Maintain emergency response readiness including first aid stations, fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life rings, and emergency evacuation plans.
- Prepare weekly and monthly safety reports, MIS dashboards, and present safety performance metrics to project and corporate leadership.
- Liaise with client safety teams, statutory inspectors, and third-party auditors during site inspections and audits.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma or Degree in Safety Management, Fire & Safety Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent.
- NEBOSH IGC / ADIS / Diploma in Industrial Safety from a recognized institution (mandatory).
- 3–7 years of experience as a Safety Officer in construction, power, infrastructure, or renewable energy projects.
- Prior experience on water-body or marine construction sites is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of IS standards, BOCW Act, Factories Act, Indian Electricity Rules, and OSHA guidelines.
- Certified First Aider; training in water rescue operations is an added advantage.
- Proficiency in MS Office for report preparation and documentation.
- Strong communication skills in Hindi and English; regional language proficiency is a plus.
Preferred Skills & Competencies
- Experience with floating solar, solar EPC, or hydro power project sites.
- Familiarity with marine/water-body safety protocols, boat safety, and rescue operations.
- Ability to conduct safety training sessions and toolbox talks in Hindi and local languages.
- Strong observation skills with attention to detail for identifying hazards proactively.
- Leadership and assertiveness to enforce safety rules across diverse contractor teams.
- Working knowledge of HIRA, JSA (Job Safety Analysis), and SOP development.
- Willingness to work in remote site locations near reservoirs and dams across India.
Key Deliverables
- Complete site safety assessment and establish baseline HIRA for ongoing project activities.
- Set up safety induction program and PPE compliance tracking system.
- Implement daily toolbox talk schedule and safety inspection checklist.
- Establish incident reporting protocol and near-miss tracking mechanism.
- Develop site-specific Emergency Response Plan (ERP) including water rescue procedures.
- Conduct safety awareness campaign and achieve 100% safety induction coverage for site personnel.
Working Conditions
- Full-time on-site role at floating solar project locations (reservoirs, dams, lakes).
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions; exposure to heat, rain, and humid environments.
- Regular work on or near water bodies; must be comfortable around water and preferably able to swim.
- May require travel between multiple project sites across India.
