Community Engagement and Development Assistant
The Community Engagement and Development Assistant is a field-based role responsible for supporting day-to‑day community outreach and development activities under the Belayan Peatland Project. Working under the direction of the Community Engagement and Development Supervisor, this position is deeply involved in direct interaction with local and Indigenous communities to foster participation, gather data, and assist in implementing sustainable livelihood initiatives.
This role requires strong interpersonal communication, cultural sensitivity, and a hands‑on approach to engaging communities in a respectful and inclusive manner.
Key Responsibilities
Community Interaction & Outreach
Assist in organizing and conducting village meetings, awareness campaigns, and participatory discussions.
Serve as a daily point of contact between the project and local community members.
Field Facilitation
Facilitate logistics for meetings, trainings, and events in coordination with local stakeholders.
Support the Supervisor in mobilizing communities and arranging follow‑up visits.
Distribute educational materials and assist in conveying key project messages.
Socio‑Economic Data Support
Help administer household surveys, interviews, and group discussions in local languages.
Assist in recording and organizing data collected from the field.
Provide contextual field observations to help inform project planning and adaptation.
Livelihood Program Support
Assist in identifying community needs and opportunities related to alternative livelihoods.
Help coordinate training activities and monitor participation at the local level.
Gather feedback from community participants regarding development programs.
Relationship Building
Maintain respectful relationships with village authorities, customary leaders, and the wider community.
Promote inclusive and continuous dialogue between communities and the project team.
Help resolve minor issues or misunderstandings in collaboration with the Supervisor.
Reporting & Communication
Provide daily or weekly field updates to the Supervisor, including community feedback and participation levels.
Assist in documenting stories, quotes, and pictures for project communications.
Ensure accurate attendance records and simple field reports are submitted on time.
Qualifications and Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in forestry, Sociology, Anthropology, Public Relations, Communications or related field
1–2 years of experience in community engagement, social programs or a similar capacity
Understands and has experience in implementing Benefit Sharing Mechanism (BSM), Theory of Change (ToC), Participatory Land Use Planning (PLUP), socio‑economic baseline survey, and social impact assessment
Good verbal and written communication skills, especially to engage and interact with diverse community members
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Good organizational skills with attention to detail
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently when required
Ability to travel locally within the community/region and work flexible hours
Work Conditions
Contract based in Tenggarong; the Assistant will spend most of their time at field offices, engaging directly with local communities.
Fieldwork may involve walking long distances, staying in rural communities, and working irregular hours.
Requires patience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to community‑driven development.
