As our Own the technical roadmap and architectural standards across backend, frontend, and infra (Golang, Next.js, GCP). Design and enforce standard service architecture, coding guidelines, and error-handling patterns across teams. Build a shared framework/templates to enable plug-and-play feature development with minimal friction. Drive test-first and modular design principles to contain bugs and improve developer confidence. Lead scalability planning to prepare the system to serve 1 million+ check-ins in one hour by Dec 2026.

Responsibilities

As our

Head of Engineering , you will be the #1 technical leader in the company — responsible for scaling our systems, our people, and our execution velocity. You’ll be expected to work hands-on in the early months to clean up fragmentation, standardize practices, and prepare our architecture for millions of users. Your responsibilities include:

Technical Direction & Execution

Own the technical roadmap and architectural standards across backend, frontend, and infra (Golang, Next.js, GCP). Design and enforce standard service architecture, coding guidelines, and error-handling patterns across teams. Build a shared framework/templates to enable plug-and-play feature development with minimal friction. Drive test-first and modular design principles to contain bugs and improve developer confidence. Lead scalability planning to prepare the system to serve 1 million+ check-ins in one hour by Dec 2026.

Engineering Excellence & Velocity

Improve development workflows (CI/CD, release cycles, code reviews) to reduce PR lead time and increase quality. Own the establishment of testing culture: ensure all critical modules have high test coverage. Introduce monitoring, metrics, and incident response best practices to reduce issue blast radius.

Product-Engineering Collaboration

Work closely with the Product team to align timelines, scope, and priorities. Introduce structured scoping processes (e.g., tech effort estimation, tradeoff decisions) before product features are committed. Push back smartly when Product requests create long-term risk, and propose better alternatives.

People & Team Building

Mentor and grow engineers of all levels — especially senior ICs and future tech leads. Identify and promote key individuals into squad or tech lead roles to build a strong mid-layer. Run regular tech syncs, code reviews, and post-mortems to maintain knowledge flow and high standards.

Org Design & Engineering Culture

Restructure the engineering team into clear squads with defined ownership if needed. Build a healthy engineering culture: balance pragmatism with excellence, and autonomy with accountability. Support engineering brand development (e.g., blog posts, public talks, open-source contributions).

Requirements

Must-Have

6+ years of backend engineering experience, 2+ years in technical leadership roles (Lead, Principal, or Head). Strong hands-on experience building scalable systems using Golang and deploying in GCP or similar cloud platforms. Proven track record of building systems with high modularity, observability, and performance under load. Experience designing and enforcing engineering standards, frameworks, and scalable service templates. Familiarity with testing disciplines (unit, integration, E2E) and setting up CI/CD pipelines. Strong cross-functional collaboration experience with Product, QA, and SRE teams. Clear, structured communicator — especially in messy, high-pressure environments.

Nice-to-Have

Experience in startups or high-growth environments where systems and teams scaled fast. Exposure to Kubernetes, caching strategies, load testing frameworks, and observability stacks. Ability to code-switch between strategy (roadmaps, hiring, culture) and tactics (code reviews, debugging). Prior success mentoring junior engineers and building internal engineering training/onboarding material. Seniority level
