Job Description
The R&D Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and improving furniture products, ensuring manufacturability, functionality, cost efficiency, and safety. The role supports new product development (NPD), process innovation, material testing, and technical problem-solving to support production and business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop new furniture concepts based on customer requirements, trends, ergonomics, and sustainability.
Create 2D drawings and 3D models for furniture, including BOM (Bill of Materials) and production specifications.
Conduct prototype development, engineering trials, and performance testing to validate design feasibility.
Collaborate with production, CNC, machining, upholstery, finishing, and assembly teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and cost-effective.
Identify new materials, components, hardware, and production technologies to improve product functionality and competitiveness.
Lead engineering change requests (ECR) and product improvement projects for quality, durability, and cost reduction.
Work closely with suppliers to source samples, custom hardware, and new materials.
Analyze test results, customer feedback, production issues to improve design robustness.
Maintain design documentation, version control, and technical drawings revision history.
Ensure products comply with industry standards (safety, performance, sustainability, certifications).
Support costing teams by preparing costings and optimizing material consumption.
Participate in furniture exhibitions, benchmarking, and trend research as reference for new developments.
Requirements
Education & Experience
Bachelorโs degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Furniture Technology, Wood Science, or related field.
2โ5 years experience in
furniture manufacturing
(solid wood, panel furniture, upholstery, modular/office furniture, etc.).
Experience in prototype development and new product development is preferred.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SketchUp, Inventor, 3ds Max).
Knowledge of CNC machining, joinery techniques, wood behavior, upholstery structures, and finishing processes.
Familiarity with BOM creation, material specifications, and tolerance control.
Understanding of R&D testing methods (strength testing, durability, ergonomic testing, moisture/temperature behavior).
