Role Description
The Book / Editorial Designer will be responsible for translating manuscripts, content, and ideas into clear, elegant, and well-crafted publications across print and digital formats.
This includes designing and laying out books, reports, and other editorial materials with strong attention to typography, readability, visual hierarchy, composition, sequencing, and overall publication flow. The role requires someone who is comfortable working across a wide range of formats, from novels and anthologies to coffee table books, annual reports, technical reports, illustrated publications, and occasionally graphic narratives.
Depending on seniority, the designer may also be involved in developing design directions, cover concepts, visual systems, publication templates, and helping lead projects from concept through final production.
The designer will work closely with editors, writers, illustrators, photographers, and production teams to shape publications that are visually refined, structurally sound, and technically ready for production.
Requirements
We are looking for someone with strong capabilities in
book design, page layout, and editorial design , with proficiency in tools such as
Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator .
The right candidate should:
have a genuine love for books, print, and digital publishing
read widely and appreciate the role of design in shaping meaning and experience
understand hierarchy, grids, margins, white space, pacing, and readability
have strong typographic judgment and attention to detail
be able to move thoughtfully between literary, cultural, institutional, and corporate publishing
work carefully and intelligently through revisions
collaborate well with editors, writers, illustrators, and production teams
understand that different publications require different voices, structures, and design approaches
have strong creativity, typography, and visual communication skills
be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly in using Photoshop to create and refine visual assets
understand print design, production management, and pre-press processes
be comfortable designing for both print and digital formats
have strong organisational skills and problem-solving ability
bring a portfolio that demonstrates range and quality in editorial or book design
Senior Candidates Should Ideally Bring
experience leading publication design projects from start to finish
stronger conceptual and systems thinking
confidence managing complex editorial structures and multiple stakeholders
refined judgment in typography, sequencing, cover direction, and editorial flow
