Job Description

ROLE DESCRIPTION The Economic Researcher will lead the economic component of TJF’s research on agroforestry development and farmer livelihood systems in Indragiri Hilir. The project examines how agroforestry can strengthen food security and economic sustainability in suboptimal land contexts. The researcher will be responsible for analysing, modelling, and forecasting the economic feasibility of agroforestry-based livelihoods—combining field-based economic data collection with business and market analysis. The position requires both quantitative economic expertise and contextual understanding of rural livelihoods and environmental challenges.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and conduct field-based economic studies to understand household income structures, cost-benefit patterns, and market linkages in agroforestry systems.

Employ relevant economic valuation and modelling methods, including: a) Cost–Benefit Analysis (CBA) and Net Present Value (NPV) modelling for different agroforestry options, b) Enterprise or value chain analysis to evaluate production-to-market linkages, c) Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) or Choice Experiment (CE) for assessing farmers’ Willingness to Pay (WTP) for improved inputs, environmental services, or agroforestry interventions, and d) Sensitivity and scenario analysis to test different livelihood and market conditions.

Publish your findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and contribute to TJF’s outreach efforts, such as writing reports, creating policy briefs, or leading workshops for farmers.

Present at relevant conferences, seminars, and scientific forums to communicate research findings and stay updated on the latest developments in the field.

Collaborate with research institutions, universities, and relevant government bodies to align findings with current policies and scientific advancements.

COMPULSORY REQUIREMENTS

Fluent in English, written and verbal.

A bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Economics, Agronomy, Sociology, Development Studies, or Statistics, or other related disciplines with demonstrated experience in rural livelihood research, agroforestry, or economic analysis.

Minimum 2 years of work experience in a role connected to the responsibilities outlined above.

COMPETENCIES

Strong grasp of farm and household economic systems, including income, cost structures, and market behaviour.

Ability to conduct cost–benefit analysis, business modelling, and economic valuation (e.g., willingness to pay, contingent valuation).

Skilled in survey design, data collection, and statistical analysis using R, STATA, SPSS, or Excel. Capable of transforming raw field data into meaningful economic and policy insights.

Experienced in working directly with farmers, cooperatives, or local communities. Sensitive to social, cultural, and gender dynamics influencing livelihood decisions.

Demonstrated experience or exposure to food security and agricultural issues, particularly in the context of pest and disease management.

Proven track record in conducting scientific research, with at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal or equivalent outlet.

Self-driven, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines.

Existing professional network within universities, research institutions, or NGOs working on agriculture, environment, or food systems.

Sensitivity to socio-cultural and environmental contexts, especially in working with local farming communities.

Proactive, self-motivated, and detail-orientated.
