Principal II, Packaging and Labelling Engineering
Join Alcon – a global leader in eye care – as a Principal II, Packaging and Labelling Engineer. This role leads the development, validation, and execution of packaging and labeling solutions for our products, working with vendors to build and validate packaging machines, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing processes for efficiency and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Packaging & Labeling Development
Design, develop, and test innovative and compliant packaging solutions that ensure product integrity and user safety.
Lead labeling development, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with industry regulations.
Coordinate with global Alcon functions to generate, review and align on the content and design of primary and secondary labeling for product updates.
Drive improvements in the Global Labeling Process, reducing review and approval cycle times.
Serve as Labeling SME for audit support of existing product offerings.
Lead team members on communications and planning with R&D and MTO functions related to all packaging and labeling development.
Packaging Machine Design & Validation
Work with vendors to validate packaging machinery, including automated lines, sealing systems, and labeling equipment.
Develop and execute validation protocols (IQ, OQ, PQ) for new and existing packaging equipment.
Conduct root‑cause analysis and troubleshoot packaging machine failures.
Ensure equipment meets efficiency, quality, and compliance standards.
Collaborate with vendors to implement custom solutions.
Initiate change controls, validation, and risk documentation within the quality system.
Lead development of URS and specifications for packaging equipment to suppliers.
Coordinate with production, facilities, and quality departments to install and validate new machines.
Ensure compliance with H&S and environmental requirements.
Regulatory & Compliance
Ensure all packaging and labeling solutions comply with regulatory requirements (FDA, ISO, EU MDR, cGMP).
Support audits and risk assessments related to packaging, labeling, and machine validation.
Maintain documentation for regulatory submissions and quality assurance.
Maintain excellent knowledge of regulatory and compliance standards for packaging and labeling.
Process Optimization & Cost Management
Optimize packaging and labeling processes for efficiency, cost‑effectiveness, and sustainability.
Lead troubleshooting efforts for packaging‑related manufacturing issues.
Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
Work with supply chain and production teams to streamline packaging operations.
Project Leadership & Cross‑functional Collaboration
Lead packaging and labeling projects from concept to execution, ensuring timelines and budgets are met.
Collaborate with R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Marketing teams to align packaging with product requirements.
Train and mentor junior engineers and packaging technicians.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in science or engineering (diploma holders with significant experience may be considered).
At least 7 years of relevant experience.
Strong understanding of packaging and labeling technology used in manufacturing.
Hands‑on experience with packaging and labeling equipment.
Solid knowledge of validation processes.
Experience in medical devices or pharmaceutical manufacturing.
