Offer Description
CONTEXT
Vis iting Professor Philip De Jager is seeking a research engineer to work on the histology platform at the Paris Brain Institute. The platform is open to all Institute teams as well as external groups (academic or industrial). It is equipped with cutting‑edge technology and dedicated to the histological analysis of rodent and human biological tissues, including histological preparation, various cutting procedures, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, RNAscope, laser microdissection, advanced imaging techniques, and image analysis (https://histomics.institutducerveau-icm.org/).
Within the histology platform, the research engineer will be responsible for conducting spatial transcriptomics experiments. They will prepare tissue sections for this innovative technology of gene expression analysis, perform experiments using state‑of‑the‑art automated systems, and ensure the follow‑up and interpretation of experiments in close collaboration with the genomics and bioinformatics platforms at the Paris Brain Institute. They must be able to interact with research teams and discuss results in both English and French.
Main missions
Prepare and section human and animal tissues for spatial transcriptomics experiments
Perform immunohistochemistry and/or histological staining required for the selection of regions of interest in spatial transcriptomics
Set up advanced workflows for spatial transcriptomics (e.g., image segmentation, quantification of transcript and/or protein distribution)
Carry out initial standard analyses of spatial transcriptomics data
Organize and monitor the shared use of equipment and workstations
Maintain, catalogue, and promote spatial transcriptomics techniques under the supervision of the operational and scientific heads of the platform
Train scientists in the use of spatial transcriptomics techniques and draft procedures
Use, maintain, and develop the laboratory information management system to support analyses
Advise users on technical possibilities and limitations, analysis methods, interpretation, and provide follow-up
Draft experimental or study reports, technical notes
Collaborate closely with scientific teams, genomics and data analysis platforms to implement innovative protocols to finely localize and quantify gene or protein expression
Participate in project meetings
Present progress in spatial transcriptomics techniques at scientific conferences (internal and external) or in scientific journals
Ensure compliance with health and safety rules, implement quality assurance procedures, and monitor equipment calibration
Conduct scientific and technological watch in this emerging field
Profile
Required degree:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent)
Skills:
3 to 5 years of professional experience
Strong expertise in histology (sectioning, histological staining, immunohistochemistry), particularly in nervous system histology
Strong expertise in molecular biology (ISH, RNAscope, FISH, etc.)
Knowledge:
Good knowledge of genomics techniques (RNA extraction, qPCR, RNAseq, etc.)
Basic knowledge of data analysis desirable but not required (R and/or Python)
Strong writing and scientific communication skills (English and French)
Proficiency in computer tools
Autonomy and rigor
Excellent organizational skills
Strong ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
