The SPARES Lab (Security & Protection of Advanced Renewable-rich Energy Systems) at Lakehead University focuses on smart grid development, integration of renewable energy sources, and the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure. Research questions include: How can we ensure reliable operation of grids with high renewables penetration? What are the vulnerabilities of modern energy systems to cyber threats, and how can we mitigate them? Project Details
Multiple Fully Funded Positions (Master’s And Ph.D.) are available in the SPARES Lab, led by Dr. Amir Ameli. The lab advances the security and protection of energy systems increasingly reliant on renewables and digital technologies. Research topics include:
Modeling and simulation of smart grids and microgrids
Integration of renewable energy sources into existing power systems
Development and application of advanced power-system software tools (e.g., PSCAD, EMTP)
Cybersecurity strategies for critical infrastructure
Use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in grid monitoring and protection
Testbed development for validating new concepts and technologies
The lab offers a collaborative and innovative research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidates for these positions are highly motivated with:
A strong background in mathematics and power-system modeling
Demonstrated interest in smart grids, renewable energy, and/or cybersecurity
Experience with power-system software (such as PSCAD, EMTP, etc.) is an asset
