Job Description

Overview Legal Counsel, Capital Markets at BMO. Provides legal advice and services to BMO Financial Group’s client-focused capital markets business that operates in a dynamic trading and regulatory environment. The candidate will support the business with a focus on derivatives and related capital markets initiatives.

Responsibilities

Deliver legal advice, instruct external counsel, and ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures.

Draft and negotiate derivatives and metals documentation such as ISDAs, trade confirmations, confidentiality agreements, collateral agreements, novation agreements and ancillary documentation.

Design legal advice strategies and approaches for capital markets activities, making recommendations to minimize legal issues, create efficiencies and contribute to growth.

Serve as a prime subject matter expert on relevant laws, regulations and policies for senior leaders and cross-functional stakeholders (including sales and trading, tax, corporate banking and cross-business risk).

Identify, exercise judgment, and resolve complex, confidential and sensitive matters.

Make recommendations to senior leaders on strategy and new initiatives based on in-depth understanding of the business group.

Resolve daily issues and/or escalate with appropriate analysis and recommendations.

Implement areas of improvement to ensure consistency with the marketplace.

Apply expertise to address unique or ambiguous situations, identify risks and mitigants, and find solutions to complex, non-routine problems.

Geographic scope: Canada, U.S., global.

Note: Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Typically 3-6 years of legal practice or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Legal practice expertise and ability to draft and negotiate metals and OTC derivatives documentation such as ISDAs, CSAs, control agreements, confidentiality agreements, collateral agreements, risk participation, give-up agreements, trade confirmations and ancillary documentation.

Degree in law (LLB or JD) and license to practice law in relevant jurisdiction.

Knowledge of business and regulatory environment in which BMO Financial Group operates.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize a wide variety of matters simultaneously.

Negotiation skills – advanced/expert; verbal and written communication skills – advanced/expert; analytical and problem-solving skills – advanced/expert; influence and collaboration skills with cross-group teamwork – advanced/expert.

Results-oriented, driven and self-motivated with a commitment to excellence.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: $89,700.00 - $167,700.00

Pay Type: Salaried

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type. Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on pay type and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
