Job Description

Overview The New Brunswick Heart Centre (NBHC - https://nbheartcentre.ca/) and the Department of Surgery, affiliated with Dalhousie University New Brunswick Medical School, seek an Academic Cardiac Surgeon in the Division of Cardiac Surgery. Subspecialty training in structural heart intervention and/or minimally invasive valve surgery would be an asset. The NBHC is located at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The NBHC is the sole tertiary cardiac care program for New Brunswick, and also serves Prince Edward Island. It has an annual cardiac surgery volume of approximately 1000 cases, spanning the full spectrum of cardiac surgery. We have a well-established and collaborative Heart Team that strives to provide modern cardiac surgical care to address valvular heart disease, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and aortic conditions including endovascular approaches. Surgeons play a leading role in the multidisciplinary Transcatheter Aortic Valve (TAVI), Mitra Clip, Lead Extraction, and cardiogenic shock programs. The successful candidate will join 5 other cardiac surgeons, supported by 7 dedicated Nurse Associates. The projected start time may be as early as January 2026, but is flexible. Proficiency in both official languages is an asset. Remuneration is via an Alternate Funding Plan shared among the surgeons, paid by the New Brunswick Department of Health. Academic cross appointment at both Dalhousie University or/and Memorial University is valued and part of ensuring quality of care. The Division of Cardiac Surgery is an integral part of the Department of Surgery. Division members have excellent opportunities for educational and research endeavours in addition to their clinical responsibilities. Candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick, privileges with Horizon Health Network and membership with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as adequate liability insurance.

Hours of Work

Hours of work are normally provided during the week Monday to Friday to provide cardiac surgical for the Province of New Brunswick.

After-hours and weekend call coverage in coordination with members of the Division of Cardiac Surgery.

Responsibilities

Patient care is shared equally among the other cardiac surgeons

Daily inpatient rounds

Operating sessions as assigned by the Division of Cardiac Surgery

In-patient consultations

Hospital-based clinics

Involvement in resident and medical student teaching

Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values and strategic directions.

Remuneration A nationally competitive Academic Funding Plan compensates New Brunswick Heart Centre cardiac surgeons for clinical excellence, medical education, and administration. The successful applicant will be compensated for their clinical work and general contribution to the department.

Incentives

Moving expense allowance provided with a return of service agreement.

Expected Start Date January 2026 (start date is flexible).

Qualifications

A medical degree is required.

Certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada in Cardiac Surgery.

Candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.

Proficiency in English is required. Bilingual skills would be considered an asset.

In accordance with immigration requirements, preference will be given to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada.

Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.

Good attendance and work record.

Physically able to perform assigned duties.
