Job Description
Reporting to the Director, Underwriting, the Sr Underwriting Consultant assumes responsibility for the risk selection in order to meet departmental objectives. This is a remote position in Canada.
Responsibilities
Underwrite complex facultative risks in alignment with RGA underwriting guidelines.
Deliver prompt, efficient, and courteous service while providing technical expertise and support to clients.
Ensure timely and high-quality service standards are consistently met.
Act independently on the most complicated cases within delegated authority.
Co-sign cases for junior underwriters and provide mentorship, training, and guidance.
Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams including pricing, business development, administration, claims, global underwriting, and medical teams.
Review and contribute to product design, policy provisions, treaties, underwriting guidelines, and business development initiatives.
Participate in RGA events and industry activities to foster strong client relationships.
Technical Expertise
Demonstrates superior knowledge of medical and financial underwriting techniques and maintains awareness of industry trends and advancements.
Applies critical thinking and technical knowledge to the most complex casework.
Possesses a solid understanding of high-net-worth (HNW) sales concepts and their market applications, with the ability to educate others.
Leadership & Collaboration
Supports departmental management through training, leading team discussions, and contributing to the resolution of technical and client issues.
Actively participates in internal risk management, operational initiatives, and special projects.
Effectively manages high-pressure situations and proactively addresses challenges.
Provides input and leadership in team projects, campaigns, and strategic initiatives.
Fosters a collaborative and solution-oriented environment across internal and external stakeholders.
Skills
Underwriting authority up to $10M (Life) and $1M (Critical Illness).
10–15+ years of experience in Individual Life underwriting.
Deep expertise in medical terminology, insurance law, and risk-based accounting.
Proven track record in underwriting complex, high-net-worth cases.
Strong grasp of medical and financial risk factors.
Sharp analytical thinking and sound judgment in high-stakes decisions.
Skilled in interpreting advanced medical and financial documentation under pressure.
Highly organized with the ability to prioritize and deliver in fast-paced environments.
Clear and effective communicator, both written and verbal.
Builds strong relationships and fosters collaboration across teams.
Client-focused, proactive, and aligned with business goals.
Self-driven, adaptable, and committed to excellence.
