Overview
Board Treasurer (Non-Paid Volunteer Position) – Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) is seeking a Board Treasurer to lead financial planning, reporting, and oversight for an entirely volunteer-run organization that relies on donations and volunteers to support animal welfare.
The Opportunity
As Board Treasurer, you will serve as the financial officer of EHS and a trusted advisor to the Board. You will oversee the Society’s budget, resource allocation, and financial sustainability, ensuring the integrity of operations and compliance with statutory obligations. You will work with Board members and senior operational leads to provide timely financial information and governance.
Your contributions will include:
Providing financial leadership that keeps EHS aligned with its mission and objectives.
Establishing financial policies, procedures, and controls to safeguard the organization.
Maintaining full and accurate accounts of all receipts and disbursements.
Depositing all monies in the name and credit of EHS in Board-approved bank accounts.
Disbursing funds under the direction of the Board or Executive Committee and approving invoices in line with policy.
Maintaining accurate financial records, proper allocation of line items, and tracking key trends and risks.
Reporting financial position and transactions to the Board or Executive Committee as required.
Preparing and submitting the annual budget, in cooperation with the President and senior managers.
Submitting regular Treasurer’s reports and presenting the annual financial statement at the Annual General Meeting.
Managing the external audit process, cooperating with auditors, and presenting the Audit Report to the membership.
Ensuring sound cash management and investments in accordance with established policies.
Chairing the Finance Committee (if established), preparing agendas, and setting a year-round calendar of financial priorities.
Addressing emerging financial issues promptly to the Board.
Performing other duties prescribed by the Board or Executive Committee.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate?
We are seeking a collaborative and principled financial leader who is:
A member in good standing of the CPA professional association.
Experienced in leading finance teams (minimum 5 years), ideally with nonprofit sector exposure.
Familiar with nonprofit Boards of Directors and financial governance.
Skilled in accounting, budgeting, financial planning, audit, governance, and tax compliance.
Proactive, analytical, and able to navigate complex challenges with integrity.
Strong in relationship-building, able to partner with government, auditors, and stakeholders.
Organized, detail-oriented, and action-driven, with excellent project management and delegation skills.
Passionate about animal welfare and committed to supporting an entirely volunteer-run organization.
A member of EHS in good standing (or willing to become one if elected).

The Fine Print
Term : Two-year volunteer commitment.
Hours : Approximately 5–10 hours per month, including monthly Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting.
Flexibility : Most work can be completed remotely, aside from mandatory meetings.

The process for selecting the Board Treasurer begins with an interview with the HR team and select Board members. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to present their platform to our membership for voting.
