Our client is an active investor, owner, and manager of global real estate assets. Founded in 1999, our client currently manages over $11.5 billion of assets under management in direct real estate investments, public securities, real estate debt, development projects, and property management.
Our client is seeking a
Tax Manager (Associate title) to join the Finance & Operations Team (FinOps)
and be the go-to person for all tax compliance matters. This position is responsible for the overall Canadian, US and foreign tax compliance process (direct/related filings) for 250+ legal entities by using Big 4 accounting firms for tax compliance work and internal FinOps support. The position is also responsible for reviewing returns and project managing the end-to-end compliance process, including coordination with the FinOps team and accounting firms. The position is also responsible for the oversight of the HST/GST compliance filings of development projects and Selected Listed Financial Institution “SLFI”. Select tax provision work for the corporate structures will also be the responsibility of this role.
The position will also be involved in certain tax planning work, correspondence with tax authorities (including CRA, Revenu Quebec, and IRS) on tax related matters, corporate tax payment and instalment management, and other similar work.
This role is an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking to grow his/her skills in domestic and foreign corporate, trust, and partnership tax, with an exposure to the real estate industry, and to also build his/her tax knowledge through external learning and by working closely with the Partner, Tax.
Key Responsibilities
Overall management of the tax compliance process (Canadian, US, foreign) for corporations, trust, and partnerships, that are prepared by the Big 4 accounting firms, which comprised of 250+ legal entities (~ 20 funds + legal entities)
Correspondence with CRA, Revenu Québec, IRS, and other tax authorities as appropriate
Review HST/GST/QST compliance of corporate entities and development projects
Review of Selected Listed Financial Institution HST/GST/QST returns (annual basis)
Work with internal FinOps accountants to analyze financial statements (primarily IFRS) for current and deferred tax amounts for funds and corporate; coordinate with Big 4 accounting firms where necessary to discuss financial statement tax note; select recurring tax provision work
Research and analyze tax matters and inquiries related to the funds and investors (e.g., tax slips from funds), create investor materials and guides
Limited FATCA/CRS compliance review work
May participate in special projects with exposure to private equity/direct real estate investments for tax considerations, including exposure to Canadian and international real estate tax planning structures and real estate development tax matters
In addition to managing the external accounting firm partners, this individual may be responsible for managing a tax co-op student during Jan-Apr of each year.
Design and recommend technology and processes improvements.
Consider internal controls and processes for tax.
Be mindful of changing tax laws and regulations.
Job Requirements
Knowledge and Experience
CPA, CA (or equivalent) or nearing completion/certification
MTax or In-Depth tax program is an asset, but not a requirement
An individual with a strong background in tax and accounting, with at least 3 years of experience in a tax compliance role
General knowledge of tax laws and willingness to learn
Demonstrate creativity and flexibility at resolving issues
Experience with Taxprep or similar tax software is a requirement
Experience with Yardi accounting system is an asset
Strong/advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerBI, Power Query (macro knowledge is an asset)
