Overview
Head of Development - Canada role at Subway. Lead all aspects of Development to support the brand’s footprint across Canada, including market planning, franchisee engagement, evaluation and selection, and real estate site selection (new sites and optimization of existing network). Work with Subway North America design teams on new unit construction and remodel targets. Build a strong pipeline for new store openings and align development activities with national objectives.
About the Role
We are searching for a Head of Development to join our Canada Executive Leadership Team. The scope includes market planning, franchisee engagement, evaluation and selection, real estate site selection activity, collaboration with Subway North America design teams, construction of new units, and delivering remodel targets. The role aims to increase speed to market and transform Development KPIs in Canada, with a national scope and alignment toward network optimization and development of new locations.
Responsibilities
Build and execute a strategic development plan for the optimization of Subway Canada restaurants (current and future) with a clear focus on Franchisee profitability.
Work closely with Subway North America Development team to ensure consistency between US & Canada regarding design requirements, franchising updates, leasing updates and large partner relationships.
Leadership – 30%
Attract, retain, and develop highly effective development professionals and support staff.
Ensure compliance with all applicable policies, laws, and regulations related to business and employment.
Oversee people, processes and programs to ensure talent is in place for current and future needs, providing leadership and development.
Set work methods, establish performance goals, and provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and development to enhance team performance.
Lead and liaise with Director, Real Estate & Leasing and Manager, Market Planning to build a robust real estate pipeline for new growth and network optimization.
Franchising – 15%
Lead and liaise with Director, Franchising for identification, evaluation and selection of qualified new single and multi-unit franchisees across Canada; identify top existing multi-unit operators and establish a growth roadmap for these partners.
Position Subway as the franchisor of choice in Canada.
Construction – 15%
Lead and liaise with Sr Manager, Construction for timely, accurate, on-budget construction of all new units and remodels across Canada.
Collaborate with IPC partners to identify cost savings and value engineering opportunities to drive franchisee profitability.
Skills & Capabilities
A minimum of 10 years experience in Development.
Strong knowledge of the Canadian Real Estate Market (leasing, renewals, municipal codes, contractors, etc.)
Bachelor’s degree in business preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Access, Internet, Drop Box, Tableau, Project Manager, etc.
Understanding of current industry sales management practices and tools relevant to Franchise Development.
Proven track record of sales success in the franchise sales industry.
Strong presentation skills for one-on-one, small groups, and large audiences; Real Estate knowledge is a plus.
Ability to persuade and gain support from stakeholders to align with strategic goals.
High attention to detail, strong organizational and multi-tasking skills, adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently and in teams; travel as needed for meetings and training.
