THE OPPORTUNITY
This is an exciting opportunity for a purpose-driven leader to help shape the future of a growing charity. The Executive Director (Contractor) works alongside a committed volunteer board and operating committee to strengthen programs, grow funding, and expand community impact. We are seeking someone who brings initiative, creativity, and heart.
NATURE OF ENGAGEMENT
This is a one-year (12 months) independent contractor engagement with possibility of renewal based on performance and available funding. As a self-employed contractor, the Executive Director is responsible for their own taxes, insurance, benefits and statutory remittances.
The ideal start date is ASAP or by April 2026
POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director (Contractor) is accountable for organizational performance and serves as the primary link between day-to-day management and the governing Board of Directors. This role ensures alignment between operations and the Board’s strategic direction; oversees the Operations team and supports efficient communication, effective decision-making, and compliance, and acts as the central point of contact and bridge between the Board, Operations Team, and CTDS's volunteer base.
POSITION PROFILE
(Key responsibilities include but are not limited to)
Leadership & Governance Support:
Support and advise the Board.
Board-approved strategic plans and operational priorities.
Prepare monthly and quarterly performance reports such as:
informing the Board of concerns, conflicts, and oversight
informing the Board of grant application status
alerting the Board of variances to budget, operations, or strategic plan
Program & Service Management:
Oversee program planning, delivery, and evaluation.
Ensure volunteer training standards and operational consistency
Maintain quality assurance and risk protocols.
Assist in the development and manage the annual budget.
Provide contribution to monthly financial reports.
Comply with CRA requirements and proper financial controls.
Lead grant writing, sponsorship outreach, and donor engagement.
Utilize board connections, skills, and experience as required
Maintain donor database and reporting requirements.
Develop and track annual fundraising plan and performance targets for Board review.
Community Engagement & Advocacy:
Represent CTDS at events, meetings, and in media.
Build and maintain relationships with agencies, funders, and community groups.
Support recruitment, screening, and coordination of volunteers.
Provide leadership, mentorship and communication to operations teams.
Compliance & Administration:
Develop, maintain and implement organizational policies.
Support compliance with Alberta Societies Act and CRA rules.
QUALIFICATIONS
Post-secondary education in nonprofit management, business administration, or related field.
Minimum 3–5 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit or aligned sector.
Strong skills in financial management, fundraising, and grant writing.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of Alberta nonprofit regulations and CRA charitable compliance.
Certification such as Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) and/or Certified Association Executive (CAE) would be considered an asset.
Must have access to a vehicle.

COMPENSATION AND WORK HOURS
This is a fee-for-service contract with compensation commensurate with experience and scope of work. This role offers flexibility in scheduling and autonomy, with emphasis on outcomes rather than hours worked.
Please note that the successful candidate will be required to pass a Vulnerability Sector Clearance (VSS) police check as well as the CTDS onboarding orientation.
