Responsibilities

Provide corporate legal advice to internal clients on a variety of areas, including (re)insurance, compliance, distribution, market conduct and real estate matters.

Assist with ensuring and reporting on the companyโ€™s compliance with applicable legal, regulatory and Munich Re Group internal requirements.

Provide sound and practical legal advice, review and draft agreements, reinsurance treaties, insurance policies, internal policies, procedures and guidelines, and advise on corporate litigation.

Collaborate with internal clients to identify and mitigate legal and compliance risk.

Work closely with the Risk Management group to address legal and compliance risk and manage, review and report on the quarterly reserving process for Munich Re of Canada operations.

Identify and recommend compliance processes, procedures and measures to address evolving regulatory requirements, including drafting/revising/maintaining required policies and procedures.

Support the maintenance of the companyโ€™s Regulatory Compliance Management systems together with the Corporate and Legal group.

Assist management in maintaining the companyโ€™s compliance โ€œtone from the top.โ€

Monitor and coordinate compliance activities of other departments as necessary.

Collaboratively work with Legal, Compliance and Risk colleagues to ensure shared accountabilities are addressed.

Ensure OFSI, provincial regulator and Munich Re Group internal reporting requirements are met.

Report to and inform the SVP & General Counsel regularly on the operation and progress of all legal and compliance work and initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, with knowledge of and experience with relevant legislation and regulation; ideally background in regulatory, re/insurance, corporate, or transactional experience.

Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) or J.D., and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to adjust communication style to audience.

Exceptional computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).

Exceptional analytical, problem solving, and decision making skills, along with planning and time management skills.

Highly organized with demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail.

High degree of flexibility and adaptability to changing environment and situations, and ability to work independently and function well under pressure.

Strong interpersonal, teamwork and networking skills, with a willingness to cooperate and share knowledge.

Fluency in English; fluency in French (oral and written) is an asset.
