Job Description
Job Purpose
The Quality Control function at Smiths Interconnect is responsible for supporting manufacturing operations by performing incoming, in-process, and final inspections to ensure products meet internal, customer, and regulatory requirements. This role executes Customer Source Inspection (CSI), First Article Inspection (FAI), high-reliability testing, and related quality activities while contributing to continuous improvement, compliance, and on-time delivery objectives.
Responsibilities
Perform incoming inspection of raw materials and components.
Conduct in-process and final inspections in accordance with drawings, procedures, and specifications.
Execute Customer Source Inspections (CSI) and First Article Inspections (FAI).
Perform visual inspections using microscopes and precision tools.
Handle and test highly sensitive and delicate equipment to define quality criteria.
Accurately collect, document, and store inspection and test data.
Prepare Certificates of Compliance (CoC) and customer-specific quality documentation.
Maintain product serialization and traceability records.
Follow documented data-collection and record-retention procedures.
Identify, document, and escalate non-conformances.
Initiate and support corrective actions (NCR/CAR).
Assist in root-cause investigations and verification of corrective measures.
Assist with supplier evaluations and incoming quality concerns.
Support internal and external ISO audits by providing documentation and inspection evidence.
Support contract review activities related to quality requirements.
Perform minor mechanical assembly, labeling, and final packaging of products.
Prepare finished goods for transfer to Stores or Shipping.
Support achievement of daily and weekly shipping targets.
Comply with company Quality Management System, Health & Safety, and security requirements.
Perform other quality-related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Education Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Vocational/technical training in manufacturing, electronics, or mechanical inspection is preferred.
Additional Qualifications
Preferred experience with internal audits. Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%.
0–2 years of experience in Quality Control, manufacturing, or inspection roles.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
Basic knowledge of quality control principles, inspection methods, and manufacturing processes.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, procedures, and work instructions.
Working knowledge of visual inspection techniques, including use of microscopes and magnification tools for fine and precision components.
Familiarity with serialization, labeling, traceability, and documentation requirements in a regulated manufacturing environment.
Understanding of product conformity, non-conformance identification, and corrective action processes (NCR/CAR support).
Basic computer skills for data entry, inspection records, and quality documentation systems.
Ability to handle and test delicate, sensitive, or high-reliability components while maintaining product integrity and cleanliness standards.
Ability to use measurement tools such as calipers, depth gages, etc.
An in-depth understanding of AS9102 FAIs.
Good communication skills, both written and oral.
Controlled Goods and Technology
A portion of this position requires examining, handling, or transferring highly confidential equipment and technologies, including technical data or any technical assistance classified as controlled goods. These goods have military or strategic significance and are regulated under the Defence Production Act (DPA) and the Controlled Goods Regulations (CGR) as part of Canada’s Controlled Goods Program (CGP).
As a condition of an offer of employment, you must agree to undergo a security assessment conducted by a Smiths Interconnect Canada designated official, in compliance with CGP and DPA requirements. This screening includes verification of proof of citizenship or permanent resident status, a criminal record, and other security checks. The disclosure of controlled goods to unauthorized persons is a criminal offense under Canadian law, and you will be required to comply with all applicable laws.

Work is performed according to established procedures, inspection plans, and schedules.
Planning responsibility; prioritizes activities (CSI/FAI) based on daily production, inspection, and shipping requirements.
Decision making is procedural and task-focused, including:
Accepting or rejecting materials and products against defined acceptance criteria
Identifying and escalating quality issues or deviations
All non-routine decisions, process changes, and disposition of non-conforming material are reviewed or approved by higher level Quality or Engineering roles.
Scope, Complexity and Impact
Tasks follow clearly defined methods and standards and require high attention to detail due to precision components and customer quality requirements.
Errors or omissions may delay shipments, increase rework or scrap, and affect customer satisfaction or audit outcomes.
Internal: Production and Assembly teams, Quality Assurance/Engineering, Stores/Shipping, Engineering (as required).
External: Customers (limited), Suppliers (through Quality), External Auditors and Registrars.
Health, Safety and Environment Requirements
On-site manufacturing and laboratory environment with extended periods of visual inspection and fine motor work.
Adherence to Cleanroom Gowning Protocols and maintain an organized inspection area.
Compliance with Québec Occupational Health and Safety regulations and ISO-aligned procedures.
Safe handling and storage of sensitive, delicate, or controlled products.
Environmental and waste-handling procedures related to inspection, testing, and packaging.
Physical requirements: sit for extended periods, ability to lift up to 10 pounds, and ability to reach, bend, kneel, twist, and grip items.
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English & French.
Follow all safety requirements and participate in EHS training.
Work environment is typically at a Smiths location during normal or extended hours, including offices, manufacturing plants and repair facilities. It may also include customer sites. The noise level is usually loud and approved PPE is required on the factory floor.
