Job Description

Director, Government and Policy Affairs – WFG Canada Provide strategic support to World Financial Group (WFG) Canada by monitoring and interpreting legislative and regulatory developments at the provincial and federal levels. Serve as a key liaison between WFG Canada leadership and Transamerica legal and compliance teams to ensure regulatory affairs are aligned with the organization’s evolving business model.

Responsibilities

Lead regulatory, government relations, and public policy matters. Advise senior leadership on the regulatory environment and strategic approaches to regulatory developments.

Serve as a contributor in developing tactics and solutions to regulatory challenges in conjunction with legal, compliance, risk, and government and policy affairs teams.

Monitor, analyze, and interpret relevant legislation, regulations, and public policies that impact the organization. Advocate for the organization’s interests by developing policy positions and recommendations.

Build and maintain relationships with federal, provincial, and municipal government officials, industry groups, and other key stakeholders to promote the organization’s objectives.

Represent the organization at external meetings, industry trade associations, and events with government agencies and legislative bodies.

Participate in lobbying activities as permitted by Canadian law and ensure company and individual registration requirements are met and maintained.

Work cross-functionally with internal teams (legal, compliance, communications, operations) to align government affairs strategies with business goals.

Identify, assess, and proactively address issues that could affect the organization’s reputation, operations, or regulatory environment.

Provide timely written updates to WFG Canada business leads on relevant regulatory and legislative developments.

Participate in cross‑disciplinary projects (e.g., agent licensing, underwriting claims, etc.) in support of WFG Canada’s business goals.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in public administration, political science, or a relevant field.

Extensive experience in government relations, public policy, regulatory affairs, or a comparable discipline (typically 10+ years).

Broad knowledge and experience in the financial services industry.

Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian provincial insurance regulations.

Management experience and the ability to influence outcomes and manage relationships.

Outstanding written and verbal communication and presentation skills to articulate and facilitate important messages to internal and external stakeholders.

Ability to work in a collaborative team environment while maintaining individual accountability and delivering results.

Preferred Qualifications

Canadian insurance carrier or distribution experience in financial services.

Experience working with regulatory agencies and multi‑party government officials.

Working Conditions

Hybrid office environment.

Moderate travel (10–25%).
