A CPA, along with 10+ years leading the Finance function in a range of small and mid‑size organisations.

A suite of interpersonal, communication and leadership skills that enable you to effectively advise and influence CEOs, Executive Directors and Owners.

Experience in contracting and negotiating with a variety of stakeholders such as customers, suppliers/distribution partners and investors.

Broad knowledge and experience of accounting, budgeting, tax, audit, human resources/payroll and corporate governance.

The ability to evaluate accounting systems and controls, produce analyses and forecasts, and oversee and mentor junior accounting resources.

Smarts, confidence, humility and a collaborative nature.

The highest ethical standards.

The ability to express thoughts, ideas and vision in a clear and compelling manner both written and orally.

A very strong team orientation, embodied by a “nothing is beneath me” attitude.

True entrepreneurial spirit, and passion for fast‑paced, growing environments.

A typical day as a virtual CFO might include…

Overseeing the work of accounting teams that process financial transactions, run payroll and produce draft financial statements and reports.

Reviewing monthly and annual financial reports for management, board and stakeholders.

Developing support materials such as financial models and budgets for CEOs, for annual approval and fund‑raising purposes.

Supporting the senior management team with business analysis.

Negotiating contracts with various stakeholders—from suppliers to CEOs—managing these relationships and coordinating any requirement for review by outside counsel.

Managing relationships with audit firms for annual audit and income tax activities, and managing sales tax/employment matters in both Canada and the U.S.

Managing financial, operational and administrative systems and policies, and recommending changes and improvements as the business grows.

Acting as a Corporate Secretary—liaising with corporate counsel on required board and shareholder resolutions, distributing board and shareholder materials, issuing and tracking stock option grants, and taking minutes at board and shareholder meetings.
