Job Description
Reporting to the Engineering Manager and supported by Technical Leads, the Senior GeoStructural Engineer leads the design and delivery of
high-risk
geostructural projects—primarily buried bridges, retaining walls/abutments, and sound barrier walls—for Canadian and international markets. The role blends structural and geotechnical expertise (including soil–structure interaction) to manage technical risk, solve complex field/fabrication issues, and mentor engineers/designers while contributing to AIL’s culture of collaboration, curiosity, resilience, leadership, and accountability.
Key responsibilities
Lead designer for
high-risk
projects involving buried bridges, bridge abutments, footings, retaining walls, and sound barrier wall systems (Canada + international).
Lead
moderate and high-risk R&D
initiatives from concept through validation and implementation.
Resolve complex issues that arise during
fabrication and construction , including field support and corrective design actions.
Lead project
value-add
initiatives (cost, constructability, schedule, performance improvements).
Mentor and coach engineers and designers; support capability development and technical consistency.
Participate actively in relevant
industry forums , committees, and standards activities.
Lead initiatives to improve
department quality and KPIs
(e.g., design cycle time, NCRs, rework reduction, safety/constructability outcomes).
Identify opportunities to improve project solutions and drive
design improvements
across methods, standards, and product applications.
Perform Geostructural Designer/Engineer duties as required.
Qualifications
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with strong knowledge of structural and geotechnical engineering
Master’s degree and/or formal experience in
soil–structure interaction
is an asset
7+ years
engineering experience, including soil–structure interaction exposure
Refined analysis/finite element capability in geotechnical and/or structural domains
Familiarity with
PLAXIS
is an asset
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal technical sales and external clients
Excellent critical thinking, judgment, and problem-solving for high-risk technical decisions
Strong project management skills (scope, schedule, risk, stakeholders)
Bilingual (English/French) is an asset
Primary Responsibilities
Lead design on
high-risk
projects and provide final technical direction within assigned scope
Lead/own
standard analysis and design methods
for a major geostructural product line
Lead industry/standards participation and represent AIL in technical forums
Work cross-functionally (Engineering, Sales, Manufacturing, QA, Field/Construction) to
reduce technical risk
and improve solution value
Mentor engineers/designers; elevate technical consistency and quality
