Join to apply for the
Lead Engineer, Server Programmability
role at
MongoDB .
Note: This role can be based remotely in Canada.
MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.
Join and lead MongoDB’s Server Programmability team, helping build the core of a distributed database. Server Programmability’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, improving local server development experience and velocity, enhancing the programming model, and building low level reusable software components that can be leveraged by other teams working on the database.
Our team currently consists of six engineers, located both in New York City and fully remote. We operate close to the bottom of the stack and have a lot of influence over the performance and robustness of our open source database as well as the development efficiency of the engineering team overall. Recently, we’ve built tooling to support better modularization of the server codebase, migrated server unit testing to a well supported open-source framework, and are evaluating the feasibility of introducing coroutines to the Server codebase.
Our team champions a strong culture of inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration. If you want to work on a collaborative team that applies great engineering fundamentals to deliver the foundational components of a popular database, join us. Let’s change what’s possible for application developers, system architects, and database operators everywhere.
You’re an ideal candidate if:
You have 2 or more years of experience managing a team of software engineers
You have strong technical judgment that you use to effectively guide engineering decisions
You have first-hand experience developing complex systems in C++ (like databases, distributed systems, or high-performance applications) and you use this context to understand the challenges your team faces
You enjoy coaching, career development, and creating growth opportunities to help your team reach their full potential
You care about building a diverse, inclusive environment where engineers can do their best work
You put the customer first and don’t hesitate to cross team boundaries in search of the right solution
Responsibilities
Lead a team of 5-8 engineers, managing all aspects of people management including hiring, growth, compensation, and performance management
Be directly responsible for the results your team delivers
Own the definition and execution of the team’s 12-month roadmap
Drive improvements to processes and tools, especially those that allow us to confidently make changes to high-risk parts of our codebase
Use data to inform decisions and measure the impact of work the team ships
Guide the team through making complex changes that balance performance against other requirements
Handle (or lead the effort to handle) time-sensitive customer escalations
Collaborate with stakeholders and engineering teams across the company to jointly work on large initiatives
Work with product managers, program managers, and other teams to specify, prioritize and deliver new features that delight our users
Ensure high quality and velocity in the design and implementation of new functionality in MongoDB server
Success measures
In the first month: understand the high-level architecture of the server and the team’s responsibilities; start building relationships with key stakeholders
In three months: take over management of the team, build trust with reports, and participate in design reviews for new features
In six months: establish leadership within the organization and contribute to planning and roadmapping efforts
In twelve months: perform a full annual cycle of performance and growth conversations and contribute to the future vision of the Server Programmability team
