Job Summary
The Summer Day Camp Counsellor works under the direction of the Recreation Program Manager and in cooperation with staff to provide leadership, direction and supervision to the children participating in the Takaya Summer Day Camp Program.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide supervision, leadership and role modelling for the Day Camp Children.
Implement a balance of culture, recreational, social and educational activities into the summer day camp program.
Participate in the Day Camp activities such as swimming, running, walking, hiking and playing.
Provide a safe and healthy environment for the Day Camp participants: close monitoring of children, interacting in a positive manner and encouraging friendships and friendly behavior.
Be creative in raising funds for activities.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates that are Indigenous (First Nations Status or non-status, Metis, Inuit).
Applicants must be between 15-30 years of age (due to specific funding requirements).
Preference given to student(s) attending school full-time during the previous academic year and intending to return full-time next academic year.
Must work well with children and as a team with other counselors and supervisors.
Must practice safe work habits and maintain a positive attitude.
Must be willing to complete job-related training, including Level 1 First Aid and CPR certification.
Must adhere to workplace and program policies and procedures, and have the willingness and ability to follow direction.
Previous experience working in a First Nations community and/or organization is preferred.
Must successfully pass a Criminal Records Check.
Must have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work in Canada prior to start date.

Proven ability to be punctual and reliable.
Demonstrated ability to work in Aboriginal communities and build positive and mutually beneficial relationships.
Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, working independently and collaboratively in a work environment.
Knowledge
Knowledge of Tsleil-Waututh Nation traditional territory an asset.
Knowledge of Indigenous governments and organizations such as First Nation Band Councils, BC Assembly of First Nations, First Nations Summit, Union of BC Indians Chiefs, metis nation BC, or other provincial and urban organizations such as the BC Association of Friendship Centers, youth councils or associations.
In depth knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Culture and History in BC and Canada.
Awareness of typical child development and appropriate guidance strategies for school aged children.
Working Conditions
Physical demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; reach and lift. Must be able to lift up to 15 kgs and move/react quickly to ensure the safety of children.
Mental Demands:
This role requires the ability to manage a number of requests and situations at one time.
Environmental Conditions:
The work environment is active and noise levels vary from quiet to loud.
