About the position
Transport Canada’s Marine Safety, Security and Enforcement (TCMSS) is committed to creating a marine industry where safety and environmental protection are the top priorities.
This inventory will develop a team of inspectors who lead, communicate, and negotiate to manage risk, enforce regulations and protect lives, property, and the marine environment for Canadians.
Duties
Inspectors must be leaders and skilled communicators capable of working effectively with others and adapting to the different needs of our clients.
They should be ready to take rapid, decisive action, negotiate, facilitate behavior change, and develop new competencies in client industries.
Inspectors work in a high‑stress environment due to possible error or conflict, and their decisions have a direct impact on Canadian safety.

Intent of the process
This inventory will create a pool of qualified or partially qualified candidates to be used for future Marine Safety Inspector positions with various tenures for the Ontario Region.

Medical Requirements: Valid Health Canada Occupational Health certification
A valid Canadian driver's licence
Operational Requirements
Willing and able to travel and work overtime on short notice
Essential qualifications (required for the job)
Education:
Secondary school diploma or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience; possession of a valid Canadian Certificate of Competency as a Second‑class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship) or higher.
Experience:
At least five (5) consecutive years in one of the following areas:
Marine ship design, construction, repairs, operation, inspection, quality assurance or other marine‑related areas
Technical or operational management of ships
Chief engineer or second engineer on ships
Knowledge:
Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and associated regulations; international maritime legislation and conventions
Competencies:
Client service, judgement, flexibility, reliability, analytical thinking
Abilities:
Effective oral and written communication; analysis of technical matters and resolution of operational problems; ability to work in a stressful environment with multiple priorities and tight deadlines
Language requirements:
English essential
Asset qualifications (optional)
Education:
Valid Canadian Certificate of Competency as a First‑class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship).
Experience:
Master on vessels
Chief engineer on vessels
Employer representative or health and safety committee member/representative with respect to the Canada Labour Code Part II or equivalent provincial legislation
Development or implementation of safety management systems
Development or implementation of quality assurance programs or systems
Port captain, independent surveyor or surveyor for classification societies / P&I clubs
Design, construction or repair of commercial vessels or serially produced small vessels
Management of large technical projects
Superintendent of a vessel
Knowledge:
Specialized knowledge of tankers, liquified natural gas (LNG), transportation of dangerous goods (TDG), cargo handling
