PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Are you a hands‑on leader who thrives in a fast‑paced field environment, turning challenges into innovative solutions? As the Director of Signals and Communications (S&C) Operations, headquartered in Toronto ON or Montreal QB, you will lead and oversee the S&C operational unit across CPKC’s Eastern Canada and Northeast United States properties. In this role, you will guide testing, planning, material coordination, inventory management, and a team of 125 signal employees to ensure the safe and efficient 24/7 operation of train movement.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Lead and support all signal employees in safety, training, and safe work practices
Develop and execute maintenance and construction plans aligned with S&C standards
Oversee Transport Canada and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulatory testing within CPKC requirements
Mentor S&C leaders and employees by providing technical guidance and capability development
Conduct investigations and manage discipline for safety issues and operational incidents
Manage capital and overtime budgets and coordinate material sourcing and project planning
Build partnerships with regulators and external stakeholders to ensure compliance and resolve issues
Support 24/7 operations with accountable leadership and effective emergency response
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or general equivalency; bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in Electrical Engineering
Minimum of 10 years of meaningful professional experience, including leading and managing sophisticated projects, programs or teams with outcome‑focused deliverables, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Valid driver’s license
Valid passport with ability to travel to U.S./CAN without restrictions
Strong knowledge of CPKC Red Book requirements standard plans signal equipment and signal system maintenance testing and construction
Understanding of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS) collective agreements
Strong analytical skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel and Word

PRE‑EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

This is a safety‑sensitive position and a successful pre‑employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post‑hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

MANAGEMENT CONDUCTOR PROGRAM
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
